The Ravens and running back Justin Forsett parted ways briefly over the weekend when the Ravens released the veteran running back as they made the cut to 53 players.
Forsett is back with the team after they used what would have been his roster spot to help create space for two players -- safety Matt Elam and defensive tackle Carl Davis -- they wanted to put on injured reserve with the possibility of returning later in the season. Forsett called the move a “trial separation” and said he was willing to listen to other offers even though the plan was always to return to Baltimore.
“That was the plan,” Forsett said, via the Baltimore Sun. “I felt like if I get a better offer out there, cool. I wasn’t going to turn down $10 million if somebody offered me $10 million. But I always wanted to be back here. At no time is it fun to be in the unemployment line -- no matter if it’s planned out. Still, a tough decision had to be made. I’m definitely hungry and ready to get back out there where I’ll never be in that position again.”
Forsett returned for the same base salary of $3 million that he had before his release along with an $100,000 incentive for rushing for more than the 641 yards he got in an injury-shortened 2015 season. With Terrance West, Buck Allen and, once he’s healthy, Kenneth Dixon also expected to see time in the backfield, that hunger should serve him well in a bid for the extra money.
