When last we heard from the ESPN offseason cottage industry of reporting on the contractual status of Rams coach Jeff Fisher and G.M. Les Snead, ESPN said it was “likely” that both would get new contracts before the start of the regular season. The regular season starts tonight, and neither has a new deal.
A source with knowledge of the situation told PFT on Wednesday there’s “no update” on the contract discussions. The source added that there’s also no artificial by-Week-One-or-not-until-after-the-season deadline, either.
Still, the source said that the hope is that deals for both come sooner than later.
The reason for the delay isn’t known. Occam’s razor would suggest that Fisher and Snead want more than they are being offered, but there are plenty of other material terms unrelated to cash that can cause contract talks to languish.
Fisher signed a five-year deal in 2012. Without an extension, he will become a free agent after the 2016 season -- and the Rams will have a vacancy that can be filled without a buyout obligation.
