PFT’s 2016 season predictions

Super Bowl XLV Getty Images

The regular season is finally upon us, which means it’s time for PFT’s preseason predictions. Guaranteed to look dumb in 17 weeks.

Last year, none of us picked the Broncos to win the Super Bowl, and only one of us picked the Broncos to get to the Super Bowl. Not only did none of us have the Panthers winning the NFC, none of us even had the Panthers making the playoffs.

This year we have to be better, right? Tell us in the comments what you think.

I really don’t understand all the Green Bay love. That’s just not the Vikings Homer in me talking, I just don’t get it.

The Patriots will win another SB your hearts, you all know this.

I’m the biggest Jag fan out there.

Let’s all calm down. They’ll maybe break even this season.

It’s next year we can think they’ll break into the playoff ranks.

Ravens in the Super Bowl is…unique.

  5. jm91rs says: Sep 8, 2016 1:16 PM

Well I hope you guys aren’t the kiss of death, but there’s an awful lot of (well deserved) Bengals love on there. I’m a fan and I wouldn’t even pick them to win a playoff game, but I appreciate that people finally realize they are a dangerous team.

  6. minson15 says: Sep 8, 2016 1:17 PM

Bengals, Packers, and Seahawks got two votes each to win the Superbowl. I doubt the Bengals get over their Playoff woes this year with the loss of their WRs but theres a chance. Green Bay is kind of a wildcard for me. Not sure whether or not Green Bay’s defense is going to be able to slow down other offenses in the playoffs (when they face quality oppenents). It’s encouraging as a Seahawks fan to see that many predictions for the Superbowl, but I don’t think our O line (especially since Ifedi is down for awhile) is strong enough to last.

  7. TheCakeIsALie says: Sep 8, 2016 1:18 PM

Nobody has the Pats winning the superbowl. As a Pats fan, I take that as a very good sign.

  8. jimmysee says: Sep 8, 2016 1:19 PM

Lots of Typos here — all those “Packers” obviously meant to be “Vikings.”

At least that’s what I have to believe based on assertions here every day from all the geniuses of football from up north.

  9. skittlesareyum says: Sep 8, 2016 1:19 PM

I can’t wait for the Packers to lose in the playoffs due to McCarthy either trying to run out the clock with a 2 point lead and 8:00 left, and then fall into prevent defense with 3:00 left.

And I’m a Packers fan. I know we could easily have a worse coach, but sometimes it’s infuriating…

NO ONE thinks the Chiefs can get past the Patriots in the playoffs. They almost beat them this past year, and that was without Jamaal! Stop picking chalk, think outside the box.

  19. hgamatt says: Sep 8, 2016 1:24 PM

I get that Rodgers had several weapons missing or underperforming last year, but there were several games that he just didn’t look like the same guy he was 3 years ago. Maybe he was trying too hard, but I can’t see them jumping from what they were last year to winning the NFC (Panthers, Seahawks, Cardinals) this year.

  26. Nmcquillen says: Sep 8, 2016 1:29 PM

As long as Rodgers is healthy, how can’t you think the packers will win the division?

I don’t know if Crabtree is from Detroit or what, but even the homer in me would only give us a wild card unless Rodgers is broken in two during week 1 (crossing fingers.)

I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the Ravens this year. They could win 12 games and win the AFC North if they play like a seasoned veteran team. They could lose 12 games and have another top-10 draft pick in April if the injury bug strikes them yet again.

It’s one thing to be a fan of a team and have a pretty good idea of what to expect in an upcoming season. It’s another when there’s a very wide spectrum of possible outcomes.

  44. pkrlvr says: Sep 8, 2016 1:38 PM

I love that the first post is a Vikings fan complaining about all the packer love. Par for the course. It’s even more hilarious that none of you picked the Vikes to even win a playoff game!! I’m with you though, I think this is the year for the Pack. Lacy looks back to form and we’ve got a lot of wide receive depth and speed if they stay healthy.

  53. 6ball says: Sep 8, 2016 1:49 PM

The Bengals sign no one in free agency. They lose several players in free agency They lose their #1draft choice to injury. Yet they’re favored over the Patriots who added Chris Long and Shea Mclellin via free agency, Then added Martellus Bennett, Jonathan Cooper, Eric Rowe and Barkevious Mingo in trade. Plus they drafted starting LG Joe Thuney and starting nickel back / PR, Cyrus Jones in the draft.

Do all these factors point to the Bengals going into Gillette in January and beating the Patriots in their own house? Are you predicting a Brady to Dalton passing of the torch whereas Dalton is crowned the QB of the new millennium?

  54. tedmurph says: Sep 8, 2016 1:50 PM

Amost universally, everyone has about 6 teams in the SBowl mix. Don’t agree on all of them, but they’re all good teams, with some holes. Don,t see the Ravens or the Bengals in the SB mix, don’t see Arizona or Carolina left out. Out of these teams, the winner will be the one that has the best luck with injuries and has a good +/- turnover ratio. Let the games begin.

  55. JSpicoli says: Sep 8, 2016 1:50 PM

With the injuries, officials/rulebook and small sample size of the NFL season, it’s a crapshoot between 10-12 teams and if you don’t know it, you should.

  70. djvh2 says: Sep 8, 2016 2:00 PM

As a Packer fan, I don’t see them being all that. I think they will be good, but they have some weaknesses, including the coach who will find yet another way, that will keep them from advancing to the Super Bowl.

It is interesting that the Vikings are picked by only two of you to even make the playoffs (and each one a 6 seed), even though they upgraded the QB position. I agree and Vegas agrees, but Viking fans probably just had their feelings hurt.

  71. thegreatjimbrown says: Sep 8, 2016 2:02 PM

“I really don’t understand all the Green Bay love.”

Had a top 5 offense most years with Rodgers under helm. Last year an aberration due to multiple injuries to WR, TE and underperforming RB. This year so many guys are playing for new contracts and are finally healthy, so no reason to think the offense shouldn’t be tough. And adding Jared Cooks makes it much tougher to defend, along with Lacy back to form.

On defense, they have been slowly remaking the defense, getting younger and faster. They have one of the deepest secondaries in the league, one of the best young DTs in the league and two HofF guys at OLB. The defense should just keep growing.

  72. sindiegosage says: Sep 8, 2016 2:02 PM

  73. haywoodjablomey says: Sep 8, 2016 2:04 PM

Bold Prediction: The Seahawks don’t make the playoffs. That O-line is a joke and the probability for Trev-ONE to start several games this season is high. Speaking of high, so are all these idiots picking everyone EXCEPT the Cardinals. All this Packer love is for not, too. Their O-line will falter early and often.

  74. mzew233 says: Sep 8, 2016 2:10 PM

More people predict Ravens to make playoffs than Redskins? Redskins in a much weaker division, with more talent on their team. Ravens will struggle to hit 500.

Panthers, Seattle, Cardinals, Packers, Patriots, Bengals all look strong.

I think AFC West could be strongest division this season. Broncos haven’t lost much after Superbowl (Manning wasn’t Manning last season), and Chiefs are improving, and Oakland could be coming of age this year. If Rivers/Gates stay healthy, Chargers could still be a 9-7 team too.

  87. fredegrar says: Sep 8, 2016 2:27 PM

    My predictions:

Panthers lose the NFC Championship because Camera Newton runs away from another fumble.

Rex Ryan gets the boot after a 7-9 season. In retaliation, Rob Ryan eats the Pegulas’ mailbox.

Tony Romo returns in Week 8 after Jerrah Jones funds experimental bionic surgery. Mark Sanchez offered job as chief usher for the owner’s box.

Kaepernick’s anthem protest continues going from sitting, to kneeling, to lying down, to a headstand, to jumping jacks, to a one-legged hop, to finally planking on Chip Kelly in Week 17.

Packers lose a playoff berth in the last regular season game when somehow Mike McCarthy fails hold a 40-point lead in the 4th quarter.

Trump wins the presidency, immediately appoints Bill Belichick new CIA Director.

It’s a little crazy to map out the whole playoffs, so I cut right to the chase. I’m a fan of neither team, but Super Bowl is with HOU and SEA. HOU wins. Sleepers for playoffs are JAX and TB. Who doesn’t go this year who went last year? CIN, WAS. Worse five teams in the league this year? SF, CHI, MIA, NO, SD. NFL MVP: JJ Watt (and no, I’m a fan of him per se)–who will earn it with 20 sacks plus and a SB MVP.

Although I think the Steelers are a slightly better team than the Bengals, anyone who knows anything at all about the AFC recognizes that NE and Brady are the Steelers kryptonite. The Bengals stand a much better chance of beating NE, and are probably the only AFC team who can knock them out of the tournament. The Steelers would need the Bengals to meet up with the Pats and win to make it to the big show.

I only read these things to laugh at Vikings fans.

They’ll disappear by 10/15. Once again. Only to crank up the obnoxiousness after the draft on their annual offseason paper championship.

Then by 10/15/17, it’ll be the same story.

Ah, Vikings fans. Always good for a chuckle.

I feel like all these negative comments about the Packers, are from people that know more, and have this higher NFL IQ, than anyone else in the NFL world. (Joking)
I’m very lucky that I don’t believe one negative comment that these people make. That right there, makes my NFL IQ much higher than there’s.
Go right ahead and tell us how bad their defense is. Tell us how much Rodgers has declined. Tell us how much Lacy is overweight, etc.

There is more upside to this years Packers, than all the negative crap you people write. (See Media outlets & Vegas)
It’s very difficult when you have a high NFL IQ like me, and then try to explain to people of less intelligence, on how the game is played.
I know what the Packers are as a team, and that’s all that matters. A Super Bowl contender.
No need to explain to you, anything else. You wouldn’t understand it.

Flavor of the year seems to be the Packers. I would watch those hated Saints. They got rid of Brandon Browner so their defense will definitely be at least 50% better and of course they have Drew Brees….enough said there.

Broncos and Cards windows just opening? Seahawks and Pats closing?

Broncos, sure, if they can only find a good QB. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? Not like it is a particularly coveted position in this sport.
Patriots will eventually have to see Tom leave. Granted. Good young team around him still.
Seahawks core is all around 27 years old. You’re dumb.
Meanwhile Cards rely on guys like Carson Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald, Frostee Rucker etc. Their window closed before it had a chance to be considered open

  111. lingsun54 says: Sep 8, 2016 3:08 PM

    Yes, the Lions.

They have a favorable schedule with games against the AFC South and NFC East. They have a top 10 QB in Stafford. They won 11 games two years ago and 7 last year. It’s not a huge stretch to think they could get a wild card.

I do like the fact that every single writer put the Pats in the AFC Championship, even if not one of them had the Pats winning the SB (in contrast to the experts in Vegas that actually put their money where their mouth is).

I don’t know if the Pats will make it to the SB, but I can pretty much guarantee that they will not lose to a team from the AFC North in the playoffs. The Ravens have had our number for a while, but don’t look like much of a threat this year. We have had the Steelers number for ever and I see no reason for that to change. The Bengals need to focus on winning a single playoff game before they can even think about beating Brady in the postseason. Are there any other teams in the AFC North? No, I think that’s it.

Here’s to hoping they keep McCarthy and crew for another decade.

  126. PFT loves the Steelers says: Sep 8, 2016 4:24 PM

Feels good to see some love for the Bengals. If they can get the first playoff W out of the way, I have a feeling they go on a serious roll. They have perhaps the best d-line in the NFL, excellent LBs (Burfict, Dansby) great secondary, awesome weapons on offense (AJ Green, Hill, Gio, Eifert, LaFell, Boyd), solid o-line, and Dalton played like an elite QB last year (106.2 passer rating).

  127. dispozblcopy says: Sep 8, 2016 4:34 PM

I once saw a poll of 15 experts on how the playoffs were going to go after the regular season had finished. They had to choose all the way through the Super Bowl. By the end of playoff week 2, ALL of them had both of their Super Bowl teams knocked out. Experts and predictions = zero, zip, nada, end of. Very few even mention their preseason picks after they are by midseason blown to bits. I’m commenting here to write this, but now, in my fourth decade of following the NFL, even my low IQ has tuned out this utter nonsense. Do something better with your time, people.

Also, Bears may struggle early, but they are FAR from “one of the worst teams in the league” – check the track record on teams’ success during year two under John Fox.

Bears will finish at least at .500 or better (maybe even way better!), thanks in large part to having one of the league’s more dominant defensive fronts.

I also see that Florio has the Ravens beating the Patriots in the AFC championship, and since he has the Patriots as the number 1 seed that means that Florio has the Ravens beating the Patriots in Foxboro – Nice. If the Ravens do get that far (which I doubt) Florio could be right. The Ravens are the only team the Patriots fear at home in the playoffs. They have the track record to prove they can win in Foxboro.

I can’t even bother with these things. I like the teams that New England, Pittsburgh, Carolina, and Seattle are rolling out. Arizona and Denver have great defenses but I’m not all in on their offenses. Chiefs and the Packers have some studs and are in the conversation, but I’m just not totally confident in them putting it all together, especially KC, they just seem to have a bum’s luck every year. If last year was any indication, this will be another great year for “parity”….except unfortunately almost everyone sucks or is middle-of-the-road.

I agree, the Lions could get a WC. However, Stafford is not top 10.

All of these guys are better:

Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Luck(last year was a fluke), Wilson, Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Romo(hurt), Newton, Palmer

    May be better: Flacco, Carr…..

    Stafford is somewhere around 12-15

The steelers defense will get thrown all over this season. If they would somehow make it to the playoffs and meet New England, Tom would emberass their less than mediocre D and yinzer nation would cry and tell us how the Patriots cheateded their way to 50+ pts. The Bengals will win the afc north while the steelers fight for a wildcard. This steeler secondary is undoubtedly the worst secondary in the NFL, and a Browns castoff will do nothing but make it worse.

  148. ahostiletakeover says: Sep 9, 2016 1:09 PM

I don’t think anyone doubts the Steelers will be a top offense, but their defense could be even worse than last year’s. The pass rush just isn’t consistently there and add in Dupree’s injury, the secondary is still being held together by a band aid. Look for no further evidence than them taking a late draft pick flier on Justin Gilbert who theBrowns couldn’t wait to unload for ANY compensation. The Bengals and Ravens have better defenses and that coupled with the Bengals already boasting a good offense and the Ravens’ offense having loads of potential barring another injury plague, I think the Steelers end up looking up at both of them in the standings by years end.
