The Chiefs will open the season without their top offensive weapon.

Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles, who is still recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2015 season, is officially listed as doubtful for the opener against the Chargers on Sunday.

Charles is “probably not going to play,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said today.

Although there was optimism at times this offseason that Charles could be ready for Week One, Reid has insisted that the team won’t rush him back until he is completely ready. That means Charles will be on the sideline in street clothes on Sunday, and the Chiefs will split the running back snaps among Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Knile Davis.
