Zimmer says QB decision made, but he’s still not sharing

Vikings Coach Mike Zimmer told reporters Friday that he’s decided who his starting quarterback will be for Sunday’s season opener, but he won’t announce until Sunday whether Shaun Hill or Sam Bradford will start.

That meshes with what Zimmer previously said about keeping the Titans guessing until Sunday. Hill and Bradford split reps with the No. 1 offense in the limited time practice was open to the media this week.

The Vikings acquired Bradford in a trade last weekend, and he’ll be the starter once he catches up with the playbook and gets comfortable with his new teammates and surroundings. Whether or not he already has caught up to Zimmer’s liking, we’ll find out Sunday.

Zimmer and his staff are concerned that the Titans and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will bring out complicated defenses and blitzes that could make Bradford uncomfortable and challenge his comfort level with the Vikings’ verbiage and his ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage.

Titans Coach Mike Mularkey said this week he’s expecting Bradford to be the starter.

This isn’t hard, people. He’ll start Hill in order to keep the Packers guessing for week two. If Hill gets into trouble he can then go to Bradford.

If its Bradford, the offensive playbook will be limited as hell.

And you care because. . . .? Your team isn’t even playing mine til next week, Cheesehead. If I were you, I’d be worrying about the Jags, the heat, and Jordy’s wonky knees, not the Vikes.

    _______

For once, I agree with you. Starting Hill allows Zim to play this game again next week and the Packers won’t have any film on Bradford to help them. Starting Bradford is too risky.

I still thumbs downed your comment, though. I know it’s childish, but it’s a reflex.

  13. fwippel says: Sep 9, 2016 2:15 PM

It’s Bradford. He’s a quick study, and will present more problems for the defense.

I’m used to it, Teddy. I’ve been living rent free in purple heads for a very long time.

    _________

Yeah because he needs to make sure he is ready to play this Sunday and handle that heat. I assure you the people who have an impact on the outcome of Sundays game are doing the right work. Is it a crime to be a football fan an excited the season started?

  17. icebowler says: Sep 9, 2016 2:31 PM

I hope Bradford’s first start is Week 2. Dom Capers likes to “bring out complicated defenses and blitzes that could make Bradford uncomfortable and challenge his comfort level with the Vikings’ verbiage and his ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage”, as well.

Man. I can’t believe how many of my fellow PACK fans are letting the Vike’s live rent-free in their head. Have some confidence guys!

Smart move by Zim, a smart coach. Wish he coached our squad tbh. GO PACK!!

    @In Teddy We Trust

Ummm. Lot’s of film on Bradford already existing buddy.

Doesn’t need to be film of him playing for the Vikings.

People have film of Norv Turner offenses too.

He starts Hill because Bradford is not ready yet regardless of how “quick” a study he is.

Plus, much worse if you start him, he does terribly. Then what do you do?

Better to start Hill, and even take an opening week loss than to start Bradford before ready and have it be a disaster.

  20. codytha035 says: Sep 9, 2016 2:43 PM

with this backfield Oklahoma couldn’t even when a COLLEGE football championship. I don’t see a decade of regression from Sam Bradford making this any easier now

  23. tonebones says: Sep 9, 2016 3:00 PM

I would go with Hill and have him run the game plan they’ve been preparing since the schedule was announced. If the Vikings were to fall behind and need to air it out, Bradford would come in and let it fly. That way Bradford would only have to learn a fraction of the game plan. It probably doesn’t matter who hands the ball to AP.

  24. stellarperformance says: Sep 9, 2016 3:00 PM

I think Bradford could benefit from having puppies and kittens brought into the locker room to keep things calm.

  27. walleye316 says: Sep 9, 2016 3:21 PM

They will come out with Peterson and Mckinnon in the wild cat. That and our defence is all we need to take care of the Titans. The smash mouth Titan hype stops week 1.

  28. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Sep 9, 2016 3:25 PM

Doesn’t really matter anyway who is starting. We all know the first two plays will be Adrian up the middle for -3 and -2 yards.

  29. cheeseisfattening says: Sep 9, 2016 3:26 PM

Big deal, every coach keeps secrets. For example McCarthy refuses to say how much, if any, weight Eddie Lacy lost in the off season.

  32. shaggytoodle says: Sep 9, 2016 3:58 PM

Bradford like Theodore seems more comfortable and effective out of the shot gun. While everyone knows AP isnt a fan of that formation when running the ball.

So do the coaches finally meld an offense to maximize both run and pass games, making for a less predictable offense or do they just continue to run the ball over 400 carries this season.

  37. kevpft says: Sep 9, 2016 4:22 PM

I expect Zimmer will start the QB he wants to be starting next week vs. Green Bay. Best way to prepare for that game is to get the intended starters as much time as possible now.

A non-division, non-conference road game against a non-playoff contender? There is no easier game to sacrifice than this one. Zimmer needs to get the rust off everyone this week. Even if they lose they’ll be better prepared for the three tough weeks to follow.

  40. dtroxallday says: Sep 9, 2016 4:55 PM

Shouldn’t really matter who starts at QB this week or next as both defenses are middle of the road.

Tennessee’s D probably has an edge on GB’s though due to the Capers Effect.

If its Bradford, the offensive playbook will be limited as hell.
    —————————–

With Peterson and those receivers it’s limited as hell anyways.

Peterson can’t block, can’t read a blitz and will get his QB killed if on the field on passing downs. McKinnon is hurt and might not play at all.

    The WRs?

And don’t get me started on the OL. Hill has only one hope, hand off and get the hell out of the way.
