Bucs add linebacker, bring Vitale back to practice squad

The Buccaneers promoted linebacker Josh Keyes from their practice squad Saturday and waived tight end Alan Cross to make room for Keyes on the active roster.

Teams have until 4 p.m. EST the day before games to make such moves, which are fairly common as the season moves along.

Keyes played in seven games for the Bucs last season. He was waived during final roster cuts, then added back to the practice squad.

The Bucs also signed tight end/fullback Danny Vitale to their practice squad. The Bucs drafted Vitale in the sixth round last spring, and he was briefly signed by the Bills after being released.

I like Vitale’s pass catching ability as a fullback, but he’s got to work on his blocking and blitz pickup skills! A fullback MUST be able to pick up a blitzing linebacker or safety to protect his quarterback!Jameis Winston is going to be an all pro QB if the Bucs can just protect him!

Vitale will probably be up and down again over the next two years but he is a good developmental player and as a TE who doubles at FB, could eventually replace backup Brandon Myers, who is 31 years old. Josh Keyes is a decent backup LB, who is important given Bucs need for depth after aging stud Daryle Smith.

I wish the Bills had kept him on IR. I like this guy. He has promise.

I’m glad the Bucs added him, even if it is only on the squad.

I have a good feeling about the kid.

I wasn’t surprised when Vitale was cut, but dismayed when the Bills picked him up. So glad he’s back in Bucs gear, even if only on the practice squad for now.
