Xavier Rhodes out; Trae Waynes starts in his place

Mike Evans, Xavier Rhodes AP

The Vikings first announced Sunday morning that starting cornerback Xavier Rhodes had been downgraded to questionable, then Rhodes was made inactive for the season opener at Tennessee.

Trae Waynes will start in his place. Waynes, a first-round pick in 2015, started one game as a rookie.

Rhodes was a limited participant in practice last Wednesday and Thursday with a hamstring injury, then a full participant Friday. The team noted that it’s a knee injury, not the hamstring, that’s keeping Rhodes out today.

The absence of Rhodes also probably means extra snaps in the secondary for veteran Terence Newman.

I’m sure this is no problem for the Vikings. They’ll still win by 42 touchdowns and actually win the super bowl this week.

Because the Vikings are able to accomplish the impossible. Just ask their fans.

No problem. Rhodes is an awesome player and Waynes is going to be a great player. When you draft well, injuries aren’t a big issue. The Vikings were smart. You can never have too many good CBs.

Xavier might be a top 5 player on that D, hate to see him out in week 1

Their defense just dropped from #14 to #22.

    Packer trolls gonna troll.

I’m sure Jordy will save your team.

    Go Jags!

Rhodes is good against the run, and its the Titans run game that may be a challenge compared with their passing game. We are going to need a good game from Joseph and Floyd in the middle and Kendricks behind them. Will be interesting to watch as Kendricks hasn’t played much at all in pre-season. Game will be won or lost with those 3.

If you don’t think Jordy Nelson would have helped us win one more game, it says more about you than it says about me.

    Guess what:

Your team isn’t as good as the Packers. Every single sports reporter agrees.

It’s odd that people who spend more time reading and worrying about the Vikings than the Packers don’t realize that Rhodes has been listed as questionable on the injury report for days.

Excited to see Waynes. He looked good in the preseason and it’ll probably be him and Rhodes by the end of the year.

Am I reading that right? Does Adrian Peterson have 10 rushes for 22 yards?

We’ve been told that he wasn’t going to hit any wall.

Rhodes is needed, even though Waynes has made progress…

Delusional packer fans think their defense is just as good as the Vikings. No sorry

I would rest Rhodes again next week so he is ready when the good competition starts in week 3.

So Highway 29 is missing yet another game?
