Wide receiver Chris Harper didn’t make the initial 53-man roster in New England, but he will be on a roster for the first week of the regular season.

Harper signed to the 49ers practice squad after being waived by the Patriots and the Niners announced on Monday afternoon that they have promoted him to the active roster ahead of their game against the Rams. Running back DuJuan Harris was released to free up the spot.

Harper saw action in five games for the Patriots last season, catching one pass for six yards and returning three punts for 17 yards. He muffed a punt against the Broncos in Week 12, which led to a trip back to the practice squad before he returned for the final two weeks of the regular season.

Torrey Smith, Jeremy Kerley, Quinton Patton, Rod Streater and sixth-round pick Aaron Burbridge are the other wideouts for the 49ers.

49ers receiving corps may be its weakest unit.

    Sad sack of players

I think every season he’s started in the NFL Gabbert has had to throw to the consensus worst receiving corps in the league, so it’s nothing new for Blaine.

Everyone deserves a second chance but not if you muff a punt in Denver.

We have the weakest WR core in NFL history. There is absolutely no question about that.
