The shoulder injury suffered by Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III is “potentially serious,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

The Browns are awaiting results of further tests. Cleveland.com reported Monday afternoon that Griffin “could be out awhile.”

Griffin ran into contact along the sideline during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss and took a big hit from Eagles cornerback Jalen Mills instead of running out of bounds or sliding. Griffin has long had issues with avoiding such hits.

Griffin said after the game that he suffered a sprained shoulder but would be OK. He returned for the game’s final series.

Josh McCown would become the team’s starter for Sunday’s game vs. the Ravens (and beyond, presumably) if Griffin misses time. Rookie Cody Kessler is the No. 3 quarterback, and the Browns have rookie Kevin Hogan on the practice squad.
