Zach Ertz “week-to-week” with displaced rib

PHILADELPHIA, PA - SEPTEMBER 11: Zach Ertz #86 of the Philadelphia Eagles is is grabbed by Jordan Poyer #33 of the Cleveland Browns after making a catch during the third quarter at Lincoln Financial Field on September 11, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sunday’s opener went well for the Eagles overall, but tight end Zach Ertz did emerge with an injury that could keep him out of the lineup for a little while.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said at a Monday press conference that Ertz suffered a displaced rib under his collarbone during the victory over the Browns. Pederson described Ertz as “week-to-week” and said that his return to the lineup will be up to when he’s cleared by doctors rather than his ability to tolerate any pain resulting from the injury.

Ertz had six catches for 58 yards on Sunday. Brent Celek was the only other tight end active with Trey Burton inactive with a calf injury, so the Eagles may need to bring in someone else at the position.

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin suffered a hamstring injury and got the same “week-to-week” timeline from Pederson. He’s one of four corners on the active roster, which is something that will likely have to change by next Sunday’s visit to Chicago if he’s still ailing.

The one negative from an otherwise awesome first week. It’s certainly a loss but as long as Trey Burton is healthy the Eagles have the tight end depth to survive. It’s arguably their deepest position. Obviously I want Ertz out there but with the way the receivers played and with Celek and Burton they will survive.

Tre Burton might be back next week, so I think they are OK there.
If he isn’t, they could pull Dillon from their practice squad. He is a converted Tackle from Tight end who was playing a little of both for them in the pre-season. Worst case they move Brent Celek to Ertz spot and leave Dillon in as blocking tight end.

As for CB….yes they are thin but I would love to see them call CJ Smith from the practice squad. He was last seen making a tremendous play in 3rd game of pre-season but was hurt after that game. Not sure if he is able to play yet?

A “displaced rib”…that hurts just to read.

This could be a spot to get DGB more playing time. I know he’s not a tight end but he’s 6’5″ 240 lbs. and certainly could play TE in 3 TE sets.

Had one, but lower rib – don’t know if it is different under the collarbone.

Very painful, but only when you move, laugh, sneeze, etc…

I’ve suffered from a displaced rib before, but I lucked out. It was right next to the BBQ beans, hiding under a piece of Texas toast.

Dillon Gordon is on the active roster, just wasn’t one of the 46 active on Sunday. And you are thinking of Aaron Grymes, not CJ Smith. Grimes was waived/injured.

Based on other players who have sustained the same injury, that can be a 4-6 week recovery period. This guy sure seems to get hurt a lot.
