Mike McCoy: I’ll always take the blame for every player and coach

Chargers coach Mike McCoy went over his team’s inability to hold onto a 21-point lead in Kansas City once again on Monday, a day after he said he needed to look at the film of the game to see what went wrong.

McCoy said he didn’t feel like the team lacked “killer instinct” in the second half, but they weren’t nearly as aggressive on defense as they had been while building a lead during the first 30 minutes of the game. They also stopped using running back Melvin Gordon despite a strong start to the game that featured the first two touchdowns of Gordon’s NFL career.

McCoy also lamented the lack of anyone stepping up to make the one play that could have led to a different result on the scoreboard when all was said and done, but did so without pointing fingers anywhere but at himself.

“I’ll always take the blame for every player and every coach here,” McCoy said. “That’s my job.”

That’s part of McCoy’s job. Another big part is to win football games. He didn’t do it last year and losses like Sunday’s up the pressure to start piling up victories in a hurry because there’s not much like not having an answer to why you can’t hold a three touchdown lead to make teams look for new coaches.
