Saints cut C.J. Spiller

C.J. Spiller, Johnthan Banks AP

The Saints have released veteran running back C.J. Spiller, per multiple reports.

Spiller was a healthy scratch for last weekend’s season opener.

After signing a four-year, $16 million deal in free agency in early 2015, Spiller played in 13 games for the Saints last year.

A first-round pick of the Bills in 2010, Spiller, 29, hasn’t scored a rushing touchdown since 2013 but has been a weapon as a pass catcher out of the backfield. He has 12 career rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns.

He figures to draw immediate interest on the open market. As a vested veteran, he’s not subject to the league’s waivers system.

Watch the Pats get him for nothing and he’ll double up Forte’s stats by end of year.

  3. iamkillerfin says: Sep 13, 2016 5:36 PM

Miami management is not smart enough to try him out!!! we need a good dump off back so Tannehill can quit holding the ball & getting sacked!!!

    why?

  5. tolan04 says: Sep 13, 2016 5:36 PM

Saints should just stop signing ex Bills, 0-2 with him and Byrd

  6. jackedupboonie says: Sep 13, 2016 5:36 PM

Hey, the guy made more than 90% of leagues runningbacks. Good for him, now onto life’s next stage.

junior gallete, jimmy graham, Jariys Byrd, now spiller what has loomis done in the last let’s say 4 years to not get fired?

  8. bassplucker says: Sep 13, 2016 5:42 PM

    He’s 29 already? Dang.

  9. buffalosunshine says: Sep 13, 2016 5:45 PM

Bring him back to Buffalo.. can IT (the teams offense) possibly be any worse than 7 pts on opening day? Send Reginald Bush packing and get this guy back. At least if he get’s hurt he can keep Sammy company

Replace Graham with Brandon Browner and you’re on the money. The Graham trade actually worked out in the Saints’ favor, so far.

Another guy who grabs millions for nothing…..what a world.

  12. pkrjones says: Sep 13, 2016 5:58 PM

By being on the roster for week 1 the Saints are on-the-hook for his entire 2016 salary, correct? Nothing like pi$$ing away money, NO… smh.

  13. mwcarolina says: Sep 13, 2016 6:01 PM

Redskins, get this guy…hes s better back then what they have now. Panthers also should look into signing him

Getting a first for Graham was a nice move.
He should be fired though, this team is crippled with dead money and bad contracts.

Don’t forget Keenan Lewis, Browner, Jahri Evans, and soon to be Fleener. Brees is getting his though.

Think the saints defense is worse than the colts…

  16. saints12013 says: Sep 13, 2016 6:05 PM

    @tolan04

Jabari Greer worked out pretty good for us.

But honestly I really, really dislike this Saints team right now. From their personnel to the decisions their making on and off the field it is a joke.

What team loses a game at home on a 2 pt conversion ? TWICE !!!!!!!!!

  17. poguemahonepft says: Sep 13, 2016 6:08 PM

we need to fire the entire damned defense – hell – DREW & the offense could do just as well playing without them – it would help with clock management if they didn’t have to wait for the defense to do NOTHING!

  18. mogogo1 says: Sep 13, 2016 6:14 PM

They cut somebody else so Spiller could have a roster spot and then cut him after Week 1 when he was a healthy scratch. Unless he threw a tantrum when he didn’t get in why cut him now as opposed to the last round of cuts when they were setting the final roster?

  19. jag1959 says: Sep 13, 2016 6:16 PM

Wondering what the rest of the story is and if there was offset language in his contract. That’s a $4.5m cap hit with not even a conditional 7th in return. Bringing Loomis’ dead cap total to (WARNING! Better sit down before you read further if you are not familiar with this) just shy of $38M and over SEVENTY TWO MILLION for 2015 & 16 combined. And there are still people out there that think Brees’ contract was what was crippling the team. The single greatest mystery in the NFL: How is Loomis still employed?

    _________

According to another article it was supposedly already guaranteed so they had no incentive to cut him earlier. Though wasting a roster spot on a guy who you’re not going to play Week 1 and immediately cut makes no sense either. Really an odd move.

  21. saints12013 says: Sep 13, 2016 6:27 PM

Let’s give that bum Coby Fleener a 36 million dollar contract when you have the worst Defense in the NFL……..

We have had a horrible defense for 7 years in a row. And I don’t wanna hear that 4th ranked bologna under Rob Ryan either cause the D wasn’t really that good that year either we surrender all kinds of points.

  22. jackedupboonie says: Sep 13, 2016 6:28 PM

Seattle getting Jimmy for a late first rounder was a win win for both sides. Then even the Unger trade for a 4th rounder was the same. Seahawks do well with 3-6 round draft picks, and having an all pro tight end instead of blowing the 1st rounder like usual was best case scenario.

  23. classyjacklambert says: Sep 13, 2016 6:33 PM

Man I’d love to see a backfield with him, bell and Williams in Pittsburgh…

  24. ilovefoolsball says: Sep 13, 2016 6:36 PM

My guess is that he was not playing nice. If the saints couldn’t make him work in their offense why do all you other fans think hat he would help your sucky offense?

  25. chicagosportsfan11 says: Sep 13, 2016 6:37 PM

Jimmy Graham is a ROTTING talent in SEA, trade him to NO, PIT , BAL , GB or some team that knows how to use him.

  26. getyourownname says: Sep 13, 2016 6:59 PM

I remember how excited the Bills were to draft him after a great college career and how he had an enormous career in front of him. It never quite turns out how you expect.

  27. eljefedelmundo says: Sep 13, 2016 7:14 PM

    Loomis!

Do we need to have this conversation AGAIN?

  28. abanig says: Sep 13, 2016 7:15 PM

Hello Redskins! We could use a return man and he may be a better option at RB than Matt Jones, but he’d be an immediate upgrade as our KR and PR.

    —————–

The Saints aren’t exactly an offensive juggernaut, the only thing they are good at is setting meaningless QB records at the expense of a game and or season.

I can think of a few teams NE being top of the list that would get CJ Spiller at the top of his game.

  30. twoteamsforlosangeles says: Sep 13, 2016 7:36 PM

Saints are an attractive team for free agents because if it doesn’t work out, the players always get a nice severance package when they’re cut.

  31. realfootballfan says: Sep 13, 2016 8:08 PM

Sean Payton needs to get a talent evaluator. He’s not good at it. That defense is a mess. Their drafts have been a mess for years, and his free agent signings are a mess. Quite frankly, the only really great talent evaluation he’s had since being there was signing Drew Brees.

  32. PFT loves the Steelers says: Sep 13, 2016 8:31 PM

Something had to happen behind the scenes. They used him heavily in preseason. Why put him on the 53, make him inactive, then cut him after week 1? They were either attempting to trade him or he had an argument with coaches/management. That’d be my guess.

  33. bucsorbust says: Sep 13, 2016 8:32 PM

I guess paying for Brees to hang around another few years was a little more expensive than the Saints thought. Brace yourself Saints fan, for those high scoring losses. A 4-12 team with a QB that passes for 5000 yards.

  34. ralphwilsonisrich says: Sep 13, 2016 9:15 PM

One heck of a college back not so much as an pro. Needs a lot space play in the NFL

8 rushing TDs n 4 receiving TDs despite playing in the NFL since 2010???????? Hell, David Johnson has been in the NFL for 1 year and the starter for like 8 regular season games not including playoffs and has 9 rushing TDs 4 receiving and 1 STs TD. I didn’t know Spiller sucked that bad

    Attention NFL running backs:

Save your money and invest wisely.

  39. pioniere says: Sep 14, 2016 12:04 AM

Jets are a possible destination. Chan Gailey was able to maximize Spiller’s talent in Buffalo (over 1,600 yards of offense in 2012), so maybe he can squeeze some more production out of him.

  40. ducknichols50 says: Sep 14, 2016 12:33 AM

Maybe the Colts could sign him to play some defense. Surely he could help somewhere on that defense.

  41. draculalambert says: Sep 14, 2016 1:44 AM

He will become marshal Faulk if the patriots get him..

Colts should seriously be all over this.

It is amazing how many people do not understand even the fundamentals of how the cap works. Guess you missed the part about Spiller being a vested veteran and cutting him just adds to the Saints dead money. Brees’ contract is actually team friendly in terms of cap hits and gave them breathing room. I know all this doesn’t fit the jealous narrative of a division opponent’s fan base but facts are facts. Not to worry though, Loomis will probably find a way to turn the available cap space into a liability in short order.

  47. areyouseriousrofl says: Sep 14, 2016 9:59 AM

He was cut because Delvin Breaux went down. How much you wanna bet the Saints grab a CB from somewhere in the next week or so?

We didn’t use Spiller – it didn’t work out. At least we TRY to get good players. Now we have a bunch of no name CBs so the Saints know we HAVE to get someone in – and they created the roster spot to accommodate. We had FIVE RBs – someone had to go.
