The Saints have released veteran running back C.J. Spiller, per multiple reports.

Spiller was a healthy scratch for last weekend’s season opener.

After signing a four-year, $16 million deal in free agency in early 2015, Spiller played in 13 games for the Saints last year.

A first-round pick of the Bills in 2010, Spiller, 29, hasn’t scored a rushing touchdown since 2013 but has been a weapon as a pass catcher out of the backfield. He has 12 career rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns.

He figures to draw immediate interest on the open market. As a vested veteran, he’s not subject to the league’s waivers system.
