Dolphins sign Chris Jones, waive Brandon Doughty

The Dolphins are down to two quarterbacks on their active roster.

Miami announced Wednesday that they have waived rookie Brandon Doughty in order to open a roster spot for defensive tackle Chris Jones. The move comes a day after the Dolphins put defensive tackle Earl Mitchell on injured reserve.

Doughty was a seventh-round pick in April and completed 20-of-28 passes for 185 yards during the preseason. He was inactive for the opener as the No. 3 man on the depth chart behind Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore. He could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Jones was waived by Miami on September 3 as they set their initial 53-man roster. He originally joined the team off of waivers from the Patriots in April. He had 79 tackles and nine sacks in 28 games for the Patriots in 2013 and 2014, but spent last season on injured reserve.

Doughty seems like a nice Kid, but I thought it was a waste of a 7th rounder when they took him; especially with the needs they had at DB, LB, and RB.

Fantastic luck having Jones around still to sign. He played well during camp. This is like a blessing getting rid of overpriced Mitchell ( I don’t mean to celebrate an injury, but his contract and output don’t match). Both Warmsley and Jones outplayed everyone this Summer and deserve a chance. They are younger and way cheaper. I bet Doughty lands on the Practice Squad. He played well, but a small school prospect and has a lot to learn. You can’t teach accuracy and natural motion and he has both. Good Luck to him if he gets poached on waivers. I hope he doesn’t. This was the plan anyway as Moore cleared Concussion. Things are really looking up in Dolphin land..
