Jameis Winston is 2016’s first NFC offensive player of the week

Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston’s first NFL pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

Things went better for Winston over the course of his rookie season and his second year is off to a much better start. Winston has been named the NFC’s top offensive player for the first week of the season.

Winston completed 23-of-33 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ 31-24 victory over the Falcons. Winston threw two of those touchdowns in the third quarter as the Bucs expanded a 17-13 halftime lead into a comfortable margin that withstood Atlanta’s attempt to come back later in the game.

It was the second time Winston has thrown four touchdown passes in a game and the weekly honor is Winston’s first since going first overall in the 2015 draft. He’s the first Bucs quarterback to take home the award since Josh Freeman did it twice in 2010. That year marked Freeman’s high-water mark as an NFL player and the Bucs hope that Winston is just scratching the surface.

Que the tired crab leg jokes, etc. Anyway, Winston sure is off to a great start which is not bad for the “2nd coming of Jamarcus Russell”.

I can admit I was wrong. I thought this guy was a surefire bust. I hate the taste of crow but at least the portions are big

I have to confess, I was extremely down on Winston coming out of college. Didn’t seem like a guy that would take the game seriously in terms of prep and taking care of his body. The personal distractions reinforced that perception.

But it’s becoming more and more apparent that I was very wrong. He has obviously taken steps to get in much better shape, no off the field distractions and he’s getting it done on the field. Happy to say that I misjudged him greatly.

Arizona is going to have their hands full with this offense this week with their depleted defensive backfield, and if anything, I think Winston has always played better when he goes on the road, so even that trip shouldn’t be a deterrent but rather strangely should make it worse for Arizona.

Not a surprise to anyone that actually follows the team. Kid is special. Gonna be a big year for him now the chains of Lovie have been removed. Air Koetter wants to go deep, often. And he has the Oline and receivers to do it.

Usually when you win “player of the week” you win the game, not lose it.

I may be wrong, and i’m not putting the two together, but i think Johnny Unitas’ first pass with the Colts was picked off and returned for a touchdown by the Bears in 1956. Just an interesting fact.

Love it that my Bucs now have a real franchise QB!

Winston will get many more Player of the Week awards, and maybe one day a league MVP!

    Go Bucs!!!
