Lions’ punter gets new contract, then gets Player of the Week award

Sam Martin, Matt Prater, Brandon Pettigrew AP

Lions punter Sam Martin got a new contract just before the start of the season, and he’s showing the Lions they made a wise investment.

Martin has just been named the NFC player of the week for his performance in Sunday’s win over the Colts.

The Lions punted four times in the game, and Martin boomed all four of them, for 57, 56, 59 and 63 yards. That 63-yarder was particularly outstanding, going out of bounds at the Colts’ 6-yard line. Martin also did a solid job handling kickoffs.

Martin is slated to make $3.4 million a year on his new deal, and he’s well on his way to giving the Lions their money’s worth.

That 2013 draft class by Mayhew is paying off.

    Ansah
    Slay
    Martin
    Wolford
    Devin Taylor
    Theo Riddick

And now they are slowly getting new deals that will be the foundation of a solid organization for years to come. Nice work by Quinn to recognize this and get the deals done.

    In Detroit
    the best player
    is the punter.
    Sadness.
