Spencer Ware doesn’t practice, Chiefs expect him to play

Running back Spencer Ware played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ comeback victory over the Chargers in Week One, but didn’t emerge from the contest unscathed.

Ware missed practice on Wednesday because of a sprained toe, although the team says there’s no concern that Ware will wind up missing this week’s game against the Texans. Ware ran 11 times for 70 yards and caught seven passes for 129 yards to help the Chiefs go from being down 21 points to the Chargers in the third quarter to being overtime winners.

That kind of dual threat out of the backfield is the kind of thing the Chiefs have grown accustomed to getting from Jamaal Charles over the years, but Charles didn’t play last weekend as the team brings him back slowly from a torn ACL. Coach Andy Reid said that Charles moved up to working with the scout team on Wednesday.

“Every day he gets a little bit better,” Reid said.

There are a few days left for Charles to continue getting better until the game against the Texans, although Ware’s play last week makes it much easier to give him even more time before thinking about a return to game action.
