But Davis himself did nothing to clarify that notion when asked about the situation Wednesday.
Via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Davis was asked if he wanted to clear up what happened, but he said: “Just leave it and let it fester.”
Davis didn’t practice Saturday, and the 49ers said it was “not injury related.” He returned to practice Sunday, after reports that he was considering retirement. Then Andrew Tiller started at right guard against the Rams, leaving Davis on the bench.
Davis referred to that as “coach’s decision,” and said he considers himself a tackle and a guard now. Trent Brown has taken over as the starting right tackle, which left Davis as one of the two active backups against the Rams.
“As one of the linemen who are dressing, we have to be able to play guard and tackle,” Davis said.
The lack of clarity on what actually happened lends an ominous tone to the conversation. Davis sat out last year, and it seems reasonable to surmise he’s not thrilled with the current situation there.
