Bengals claim KeiVarae Russell

KANSAS CITY, MO - AUGUST 13: Defensive back KeiVarae Russell #26 of the Kansas City Chiefs trips up wide receiver E.Z. Nwachukwu #7 of the Seattle Seahawks during the second half on August 13, 2016 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images) Getty Images

The Bengals claimed cornerback KeiVarae Russell Thursday, a day after the Chiefs made the rare and curious move of waiving a 2016 third-round pick.

The Bengals have been looking for cornerback depth and are without their first-round pick, William Jackson III, until at least November. The Bengals are pretty far down the waiver wire order, so it’s interesting to see that most of the league passed on taking Russell.

Russell played in all four preseason games but was inactive for last week’s game before being waived. The Bengals cut guard Trey Hopkins to make room on the roster for Russell and could bring Hopkins back to their practice squad.

No one seems to have mentioned this was the pick the Chiefs got when the Bucs traded up for aguayo.

So maybe people will realise that even an average / solid kicker can be better than a nobody who gets cut a few months after being drafted.

And aguayo hopefully will be much better than just average anyway.

You don’t cut a 3rd round draft pick the same year you drafted him unless there were issues other than football related issues. I’m guessing he was either a problem in the locker room or he had some type of character issues. So he should fit right in with the Bengals defense and Vontaze Burfect.

23 teams passed on Russell, 24 if you count the Chiefs.

Something’s definitely amiss about the guy.

Excellent move by the Bengals. As usual.

The Chiefs have like 5 corners under 24 years old… This guy was the worst player of them, didn’t matter where drafted. Redundant and expendable. Bad draft pick, though.

Reggie Nelson, Pacman, Burfict- all success stories for the Bengals. Taylor Mays not. Hopefully this guy will be another success.

Low risk, high reward move. Moves like this are why the Bengals are in the playoffs every year.

That photo depicts Russell’s career to date. He is on the ground and the WR is scooting right on by.
