Anthony Lynn will be new Bills offensive coordinator

New York Jets v Baltimore Ravens Getty Images

Greg Roman is out as the Bills offensive coordinator and a longtime Rex Ryan assistant is in.

According to multiple reports, the Bills have appointed Anthony Lynn as the team’s new offensive coordinator. Lynn previously held the titles of running backs coach and assistant head coach.

Lynn joined Ryan’s first staff with the Jets in 2009 as the running backs coach (he added the assistant head coach role in 2012) and made the move to Buffalo last season. Lynn also coached running backs with the Browns, Cowboys and Jaguars after breaking into the NFL coaching ranks as a special teams coach with the Broncos in 2000.

He’s interviewed for offensive coordinator openings in the past, but this will be his first chance to run the show.

His chances of success will look better if the defense stops giving up 37 points to the other team.

UPDATE 1:46 p.m. ET: The Bills officially announced both Roman’s departure and Lynn’s promotion.

They would be better off with Paul Lynde running the offense.

  2. weepingjebus says: Sep 16, 2016 1:42 PM

So much for Rex’s profane speech about having everyone’s backs. Nothing builds morale like chopping heads the second things go wrong.

  3. hawksfansince77 says: Sep 16, 2016 1:45 PM

Wait, your offense puts up 31, but your defense gives up 37….so you fire your OFFENSIVE coordinator. Buffalo, on the clock for the first pick of the 2017 NFL draft!

  4. usa98j30t4 says: Sep 16, 2016 1:46 PM

The Buffalo defense lost that game. Fire the defensive coordinator…….oh, that’s right.

I hope Rex Ryan and Jerry Jones never leave.

    what about the defensive coordinator……

wasn’t it the defense that gave up 37 points & to create any turnovers?

  8. rdjess says: Sep 16, 2016 1:54 PM

Roman was just another on a long list of Rex Ryan scapegoats.

But it’s okay, Rex has your back Mr. Lynn.

  9. bvolke says: Sep 16, 2016 1:55 PM

Sweet. We replace an OC who took Kaepernick to a super bowl with a running backs coach who has NEVER been a coordinator. I’m starting to think Rex wants to get fired.

  10. godeepwvu says: Sep 16, 2016 1:55 PM

The trash heap will continue to smolder, until Sexy Rexy gets canned. He’s the problem.

  11. duffelbagsports says: Sep 16, 2016 1:55 PM

Well I guess the special teams coordinator is safe for a week

  12. riffrafflaff says: Sep 16, 2016 1:56 PM

Rex should be the OC he’s offensive enough.

  13. chicagosportsfan11 says: Sep 16, 2016 1:56 PM

The offense lack of sustaining any drives winded that defence early.

  14. YanksBills says: Sep 16, 2016 1:57 PM

Lots of comments by people who didn’t watch the game. The defense scored one of Buffalo’s TDs and another came in junk time at the end of the game. Salas scored another on a broken play. The offense was not good, but the defense was even worse.

DESPERATION … and it’s week TWO! Fifth OC in 8 years for Rex. Anthony Lynn is the Head Coach in waiting Buffalo so you get a preview of 2017.

  21. YanksBills says: Sep 16, 2016 2:06 PM

I hope the Pegulas are interviewing new head coaches this week. When Buffalo loses to New England and secure that 0-4 start, Rex will be gone and there is absolutely no one ready to be promoted.

  22. txrawdog says: Sep 16, 2016 2:07 PM

Bills fans after week 1: “Well if the offense would score more then 7 points we might win”

Bills fans after week 2: “Well if the defense would hold them under 37 points we might win”

LOL you know I’m right too

  23. TheDPR says: Sep 16, 2016 2:07 PM

Anyone left on the bandwagon thinking Rex was a good hire for the Bills? The league has passed by the Ryans but the Ryans, half the owners, and most of the media don’t seem to realize it yet.

  24. 4th Down says: Sep 16, 2016 2:07 PM

Rex is going to go down in flames …

  25. harrisonhits2 says: Sep 16, 2016 2:12 PM

You do realize the Bills D scored 7 of those 31 points? And the Greg Roman led offense put up 7 in pure garbage time. Which was also the offenses first redzone plays all game (1:30 min left in game). They had about 8 first downs in 3.5 quarters.

You clearly don’t watch the games

  27. jagsfan1 says: Sep 16, 2016 2:17 PM

Hire Tom Coughlin….I dont care how old he is…he is way better than the blowhard brothers.

  28. dsigrey says: Sep 16, 2016 2:20 PM

Didn’t Rex say he’d be the first to go???

  29. girgandsonsllp says: Sep 16, 2016 2:26 PM

As a Bills fan, I don’t blame you for never watching the Bills. However, don’t comment if you have no clue what you are talking about and only watched last night.

Yes last night the Bills defense was bad. But the offense was atrocious as well. Two big plays from Tyrod (which were great), a garbage time TD and a defensive score is the only reason that game was close. And it was even worse the week before.

Glaring offensive stats through Week 2 – 27 first downs, 4 TDs, 6 for 23 on third down, 553 total yards, 98 total plays

Roman needed to go. Rex will probably be next but not during the season. Esp this early.

  30. Patty Dubs says: Sep 16, 2016 2:27 PM

Roman is a moron but looks like Einstein next to the Ryans.

  32. packrule says: Sep 16, 2016 2:30 PM

  33. ReligionIsForIdiots says: Sep 16, 2016 2:30 PM

Another loser from the Jets lol.

  34. lscottman3 says: Sep 16, 2016 2:31 PM

well, at least they won the off season.

Ppl who don’t watch the game shouldn’t comment, or any of the bills games over the last year. Roman is completely inept as an OC. He runs a college system where each running play starts off running sideways. The players are to fast on defense! Not to mention the whole read option thing they run every play where the QB never keeps the ball! Not really fooling anyone there. No flow or continuity of the offense. It can be 2nd and 2 and he’ll dial up a deep ball then they’re forced to throw on 3rd down. Did anybody see them bring in ej Manuel on two different 4th and 1’s last night and split tyrod out at WR only to run a qb sneak?? WTF is that?? He’s exactly the reason this team is garbage. Completely winded the defense by the first quarter. Glad he’s gone but its to late to learn anything new this team is screwed and so is Rex

  37. trollaikman8 says: Sep 16, 2016 2:42 PM

How does this fix that porous defense?

  38. billsthicknthin says: Sep 16, 2016 2:49 PM

Rex Ryan hasn’t had a winning season in 6 years. I’m sure it’s Roman’s fault.

  39. raiderlyfe510 says: Sep 16, 2016 2:51 PM

I think Rex Ryan was pressured into firing Roman. Nobody who knows football would be that stupid. Roman is a helluva ball coach and only people like Jed York and and front office suits would disagree.

  40. canadianbillsfan says: Sep 16, 2016 2:52 PM

The Bills D actually put up 7 of those points. Meaning the Bills Offense put up 31 points in two games. Now remove the two lucky 75+ yard TDs and they put up 17 points and less than 250 yards in two games.

Yeah the D was bad, but the offense was worse.

  41. pourman says: Sep 16, 2016 3:01 PM

Offense scores 31, Defense gives up 37. Fire the OC?

  42. jjackwagon says: Sep 16, 2016 3:02 PM

Was it the Bills offense that gave up 38 points?

  43. kcflake says: Sep 16, 2016 3:06 PM

Not a Bills Fan, but sounds like a mess. The Bills offense didn’t look terrible last night. The defense was worse. And we know who runs that defense.

  45. firecracker87 says: Sep 16, 2016 3:10 PM

So, this means the Bills will NEVER be better than the Jets were during Ryan’s tenure.

    Nice destiny.

    LOL!

  46. gadzod says: Sep 16, 2016 3:11 PM

Will he try to run a draw play against a stacked box on 4th and 1? No? You’re hired!

  47. solidarityrules says: Sep 16, 2016 3:11 PM

Makes sense. The Bills only scored 31 points. With a Ryan squared defense, that’s not going to be enough to win games.

  48. grogansheroes says: Sep 16, 2016 3:22 PM

For everybody blaming the Bills O on the D being tired. Well the genius head coach decided to kick off to start the game, watched the Jets convert 3 3rd and longs. They kept the ball for half the first quarter. So the offense hits a bomb to take the lead, the D let the Jets march down the field again. It was Wrecks D that cost them the game, not the O

  49. mogogo1 says: Sep 16, 2016 3:27 PM

Lynn will be Rex’s 5th OC in 6 seasons. Even if all of them were horrible you still have to come back to the guy who hired them.

That didn’t take too long. Bills fans are starting to see what they get with Rex, all flash – no substance. Pegula only hired him to get people in the seats and get people talking about the Bills. It worked.

They should be mad at Pegula, hes the one who hired that clown.

  58. mclennon99 says: Sep 16, 2016 6:42 PM

Rob coached the Saints defense last year and gets blamed for a horrible season when it was clearly not his fault. He then gets hired to bring dignity to the Ryan name in Buffalo. And he has…the Bills defense reigns supreme!

Oh my God…do you know how hard that was to write without bursting out laughing?

  59. jag1959 says: Sep 16, 2016 7:49 PM

I DID watch the game and there was plenty of blame to go around.
