APThe firing of offensive coordinator Greg Roman five days into the Bills season illustrates how wrong a foot the team has gotten off on this season and it also contradicts a message Ryan gave to his team during training camp.
In a message taped for a Bills-produced documentary, Ryan said he would “be the first m—–f—– that goes” if the team doesn’t succeed during the 2016 season but that was proven incorrect on Friday. According to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News, the people who will ultimately decide when Ryan is the one to go changed the order of things.
Per Carucci, Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula have been unhappy about the offense since last season and expressed their concerns to Ryan in a meeting on Friday morning. Among those concerns were the team’s poor record on third-down conversions — they ranked 21st last season and are 6-of-23 this season — and issues getting calls to quarterback Tyrod Taylor in a timely fashion.
The Pegulas also reportedly don’t believe the two long touchdown passes Taylor threw on Thursday “were a reflection of progress” by the quarterback that could carry the offense the rest of this season. The contract Taylor signed before this season doesn’t contain any guarantees beyond this season, which could leave his spot on the team vulnerable to a change in offensive direction.
Should things continue to go the way they have the last two weeks, that’s unlikely to be the only change in direction in Buffalo this year.
Bits of him are already bobbing in the Utica marsh.

“…but that was proven incorrect on Friday. ”
Has any coach been proven incorrect more than Wrecks Ryan has? I think not.
There it is, Pegula is a control freak who should hire a football man.
No way he does though.
If you count opening week as starting on Thursday with the Broncos/Panthers game, this firing is 8 days into the new season. Is this some kind of record?
I think the clown show spotlights are on us, and will stay here until (are you ready for some math) Ryan X 2 = 0.
I thought they won. ..oh…that was the off season Superbowl…Nevermind
Be a stand-up guy, Rex! Stand up, and walk out!
From a Patriots fan: Tyrod Taylor is one of the few actual success stories in Buffalo. By all means, Pegula family, please keep undermining him and trusting in Doug Whaley to draft you another gem of a quarterback with a high draft pick.
And I thought the Chicago Bears were disfunctional!
I’m sorry… I like Kim Pegala …she’s doing great things for the team. Her efforts are commendable. I have no clue about her football prowess or deep knowledge of the game and professional young, physically talented players in their 20s in 2016. Even making this move now to me, is questionable. Greg Roman isn’t the problem today. It’s an absolute tragedy what’s going on with the Buffalo Bills.
Rex & Rob have been over rated for many ,many yrs
These Pegulas sound pretty smart.
They probably have an inkling that Rex is the real problem.
Should be Rex that goes!
Roman had to go. Wasn’t impressed last year, either. Taylor does not deserve the qb job but rather have him than EJ.
I knew this came from the suits and not Rex Ryan. Nobody who knows football would get rid of a coach like Greg Roman.
Taylor has little or nothing to do with the offensive issues. Running plays that have you running 20 yards horitonzally at 5 yds deep in the backfield do. Running Pass plays that have you throwing the ball 30 yds horizontally for a 3 yd gain do as well.
Now I ain’t saying she’s a gold digger
Rex Ryan is the Donald Trump of football coaches.
So if 2015 was the best year of offensive QB production a Rex Ryan coaches team has ever had and the Pegula’s were not happy with it, then how the hell did they think hiring Ryan in the first place was a good idea? Another owner who thinks he knows what the hell he is doing.
The Pegulas are willing to give you a shot, but if you don’t deliver, you will find yourself on the outs, quickly. Look at the Sabres, Terry hand picked Ted Black, had a childish love-affair with Darcy and Lindy, same thing with Lafontaine. Things went south in a hurry, and they cut-bait soon there after. They’ll find their way soon enough, sometimes progress is making the wrong choice first.
What a mess. After Sammy they don’t have any weapons as a pass catcher. Clay can’t catch and got way over paid. Goodwin might get 2 long tds all season and already has one. Woods is a possession wr who isn’t getting better. With Sammy out the D can key on McCoy and not let Tyrod run and they are stuck.
Bills fans don’t deserve better
Part of being a HC is the skill of selecting good assistants especially in areas the HC has little or no direct expertise. Rex has no clue about how to manage personnel (non-player personnel) he has to rely upon.
Good luck Buffalo. The fact that the Pegulas hired Ryan should tell you all you need to know.
I understand that the opinions of the owners will inevitably have substantial influence over franchise decision making, but it looks bad when the head coach is being forced to shuffle his coordinators two games into the season. If the Bills lose this weekend, it could quickly turn into dumpster fire up in Buffalo.
“Among those concerns were the team’s poor record on third-down conversions — they ranked 21st last season and are 6-of-23 this season — and issues getting calls to quarterback Tyrod Taylor in a timely fashion.”

Oh memories of when G-Ro was the OC of my 49ers during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure.
I guess they’re completely blind to the fact the Bills had one of the best (if not the best) defense in the league -before Wrecks showed up?
When are they going to also see they don’t have the talent to suceed, and DUMP WHALEY???
This has been reported as a move to appease the fans. Want to appease the fans? STOP HIRING BUMS! Get rid of Russ Brandon he should not be running the show. Hiring Rex Ryan, giving Mario 100 mill, signing TO these are all Russ Brandon moves not Whaley not Pegula! I can solidly say I will not attend games I will not purchase jerseys or any Buffalo Bills products. It’s sickening that we Bills fans have had to go through this for this long.
I spent years watching the mess Roman made of the Niners offence. He was hands down one of the worse OC I’ve seen. Big mobile o-line yet not one screen in 3 years. Always running horizontal plays rather than vertical. Calling 5 yard 3rd down patterns when 8-10 were needed. He refused to build schemes around the players he had and actually use their abilities to better the offence. Buffalo this is no loss for you.
They fired the wrong coach on the wrong side of the ball, never mind the blockhead as the head man. Sheesh.
The offense hangs 24 of the 31 put up against a damn good Jets D. The D (the supposed strength of the team) allows 37 and the DC gets the boot. If his name was Greg Ryan would Pegula instead have axed the QB coach? Considering what Rex said before the season started he should have refused to fire Roman, this effectively castrates what’s left of Ryan’s credibility inside that organization. Outside of it there wasn’t any left to damage.
The Bills finally get a good QB and they don’t want him? Unbelievable.
5 days into the season? What does that mean?
Pegula is a control freak and has been from the beginning.
The Bills offense leads the NFL since last season of 20 yd Touchdowns!! The offense just scored 31.. The offebse isnt the oroblem its the Ryan bros
The Pegulas are notorious for meddling. I would be very nervous if I were a fan of the Bills.

Hilary Clinton is just a flat out con artist liar. You can compare her to the likes of John Gotti.
And I don’t mean to insult John Gotti.
So funny I was telling my GF how poor the Bills are in talent and overall their play is sub-par on every level, and at that moment Taylor threy the pass to Goodwin. But all in all its the truth and the owners aknowledge that it seems.
Greg Roman and play clock management issues? I’m speechless…
Tyrod Taylor’s one of the best things they have going. He can run, sling the deep ball accurately, and the team has him under contract at a reasonable salary for the next few years. Why would they get rid of him? He’ll be the last to go after the Pegulas rid themselves of the foul stench of the Ryans.
It’s almost as if the Pegula’s weren’t paying any attention at all to what Rex did as HC of the Jets. He’s managed to ruin the only thing the Bills had working, the defense, plus he hired his idiot brother after all his failures as a DC.
I’m done with the Bills. The owners need to clean out the front office. They’re the one constant in all those years of fail.
i would think the ownership might look at the level of talent on the roster. Looked like tyrod was on the run all night, and the running backs rarely had any lanes. not sure how much of that is the o-coordinator.
also not sure how you watch last nights game and think the way to improve the bills is to fire the offensive coordinator.
Roman was respected by Belichick. This will not bode well for their gamed against the Patriots.
for a team to be good, a GOOD qb is needed. football 101
Bills do not have a good qb
Taylor isn’t an NFL Franchise qb. He is a spot starter type. He made some piss poor throws last night.
If everybody who thinks the wrong coached was fired today would just watch the damn games, you might have a shred of credibility. This team is beyond terrible on 3rd down. They have a vanilla, predictable offensive palette. They are playing against their strengths(speed to the outside, stretching the field vertically) by thinking McCoy is the bus. They run routes that take way to much time to develop. The second long touchdown was a broken play, but that first one to Goodwin is exactly who Tyrod is. Give him 3-steps and launch it. That is why Roman was fired. Is the defense bad? Yes. But the offense doesn’t get a rain-check for being equally as bad. This team should be scoring 20+ per game, a mediocre defense will yield positive results.
The Bills and Browns could merge teams and still not be competitive…
The problem in both organizations runs deeper than the coaching.
Dear Dan Snyder:
You can relax now. You no longer hold the title of “Worst NFL Owner.”
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ….. That’s what the Bills get for hiring Blowhard Ryan…….
Anyone who saw the game andnows anything about football, saw a pass defense that was non existant. Hell I could have had a stellar night and im a senior.
what a trainwreck in buff.
pegula got sold a bill of goods by rex. what a sucker.
pegula looks more dumb than haslam.
WIDERIGHTYOULOSEAGAIN: Pegula is a control freak?! Really? I guess if I owned a team i would wanna see results also if i invested millions into the team and city. You obviously don’t care since you probably live in Hamilton where the sabres and Leafs blocked you from getting a NHL franchise.Bitter old man.
raiderlyfe: “I knew this came from the suits and not Rex Ryan. Nobody who knows football would get rid of a coach like Greg Roman.”
If you are implying that Rex knows football, there are fans of at least 3 NFL franchises who would likely debate your assumption.
Having said that, the Bills’ current roster makes little sense. They decimated their defense, did nothing to upgrade the offense, and Watkins, their only playmaker, cannot stay healthy.
This franchise does not seem to have a coherent philosophy on how to construct a team, darting from one style to another with no apparent regard for whether the latest fad will mesh with the skills of their personnel, the cold-weather ballpark, or any other factors that would provide some continuity or identity.
All of that points to the front office. I suspect the Pegulas will do some house-cleaning after the season. Keeping Whaley and Ryan while the new owners ‘learn the ropes’ was probably a mistake.
Hilarious the one idiot defends the firing by saying the Bills offense should go vertical, and then says the routes take took long. Earth to Bills moron, you want to run a lot of vertical routes they are 5-7 steps drops and take time to develop. You can’t have 3 step drop pass routes and stretch the defense. You have no idea what the hell your’e talking about.
Roman is pretty vanilla, but you can’t look like idiots spening months developing an offensive philosophy and playbook and then throw it all away two weeks into the season. The Pagula’s just cut off Rex’s balls, and now this rudderless team is really going to question the head coach and upper management
To Religionisforidiots: :Now I ain’t saying she’s a gold digger…
Idiots have NO idea what the truth is….. until you know the story, shut it…..
Terry and Kim Pegula = please stop before you end up like Mr. and Mrs. Haslam in Cleveland.
You don’t want to go HERE !
Trust me.
Let the coaches coach and stay out of it.
New smart owners you never hear from like with Dan Gilbert with the Lake Erie/Cleveland Monsters & Cavs winning titles.
Pat Bowlen in Denver did it best.
Let’s face it . . . Rex and Rob have lived off the laurels of their father. They are defensive guru wannabes. They envision their defenses being as good as the ’85 Bears, but their defenses actually resemble the Bad News Bears.
“If you count opening week as starting on Thursday with the Broncos/Panthers game, this firing is 8 days into the new season. Is this some kind of record?”
_____________
Rob Ryan may have it beat with the Rams–he never even made it into the regular season! In between the Cowboys and Saints he with the Rams for less than a week before they let him go because he didn’t run their scheme. How do you hire a DC without asking what defense he plans to run for you? There are reasons some of these teams simply never improve.
0-4 and Ryan gets fired. They aren’t beating Arizona and they probably won’t beat Jimmy G in NE. Calling it now!
Looks like another case of impatient, meddling owners ruining a team for ages is what Bills fans have to look forward to.
You can do a lot worse than build a team with Rex & Tyrod. The only way this team is going to get better is through some stability in leadership & lineup.
Is Jerry Jones also the Bills GM?
The Pegulas also reportedly don’t believe the two long touchdown passes Taylor threw on Thursday “were a reflection of progress”
That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time. What does this couple know about pro ball?
Who heard of owners in winning organizations meeting with the coach once the season started? Seems like the Pegula’s (like Rex) talk a good game yet they’re worse than Jed York.
Get rid of Brandon and Whaley; and get some football people running the front office rather than political “Yes Men.”
This is not an OC problem….You have Sammy playing on one foot and no one else playing WR, You have McCoy who is fragile and getting old playing RB and no one else, the OL is a mess, the DL is suspended, the LB are hurt and the CB weren’t any good last yr add that up and your Team is in trouble, throw Rex in the mix and allow him to hire his Bro and you have a dumpster fire…..this will continue to burn until they hire a new coach and rebuild this team…..
Its definitely not to early to fire this bum of an OC. His playbook is a joke and his play calling is a joke. Just look at the 2 4th and 1’s from last nights game. He brings in ej and splits out tyrod wide just to run a qb sneak. There’s no flow to the offense and nothing makes sense. He runs a read option offense where every run play starts out running side to side and the qb NEVER keeps the ball. Not fooling anyone there. No routes over the middle of the field. Call a run play and get 8 yards then throw a bomb and end up having 3rd and 2 and a must pass situation. I could go on and on. Bottom line is ppl just want to bash Rex and the bills organization, which I completely understand, but if you’re gonna do that at least watch the damn games..
Did they sleep thru training camp and pre-season?
“Issues getting the calls to QB Tyrod Taylor in a timely manner.”
There is some fire behind that smoke. I noticed this was a problem for the 49ers when Roman was the OC in SF. The 49ers wasted a lot of timeouts and took delay of game penalties because of getting the play in too slow. Other plays, it seemed like Smith/Kaepernick was barking out the call for 10-15 seconds. How can you play hurry-up or get the defense winded when you can’t operate quickly? Other than that, Roman does some creative things, especially with formations and pulling guards. That Smith TD run against the Saints was an example of Roman at his best. But I’m not sure Roman is the problem in Buffalo- Taylor and the offense were pretty good last year while a great D dropped to below average.

————————–
Garbage! That defense was pretty talented when Jim Schwartz ran the show, now wasn’t it!
The Bills have talent. Like many NFL franchises, coaching is the problem.
I agree with this move. We continued obvious runs, 2 yard passes to the sideline that were immediately tackled and too obvious. If we didn’t have the 2 bombs Taylor’s line would be horrendous. McCoy will be better with this.
Although not providing more safety help when your two corners are getting obliterated wasn’t a good sign on the other side of the ball either but I think defense will pull together.
Reminds me of back in 2000, when the Bills had a dominant defence under Ted Cottrell as DC. Bills brings in Gregg Williams and his blitz-happy scheme as head coach, Cottrell is shown the door, and the defence was never the same. So stupid….
The Buffalo Bills have been a train wreck for years now so why do fans expect things will change under Rex who couldnt find success in NY with a much better team than he coaches now. Rex will be fired when the Bills go 0-7 and he will have earned it.
and then to bring in the Jumbo package on 4th and 1 and try to stuff it up the middle against the strength of the Jets…DL…how stupid was that call?
I guess we can add this season to the Bills playoff drought. That’ll be what, 18 straight years?
Roman had to go. His offense was responsible for allowing 37 points to be scored. Wait, don’t the 2 knucklehead brothers run the defense?
Patskreig: I’m a Patriots and that means I know everything there is to know about the NFL. PERIOD.
It always works out great when the owners get involved in the details of their team’s offense and defense.
