Wes Welker wanted to grab dinner, but Tom Brady wanted to throw

Since Tom Brady can’t play catch with any of his Patriots teammates for the next three weeks, he found a former Patriot to fill in this weekend.

Via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, former Pats wideout Wes Welker said during an interview with WQAM in Miami that a call for a simple social excursion turned into something more.

“It was funny. I hit him up [because] I’m actually heading up to the game [Saturday], and I hit him up to do dinner Saturday night,” Welker said. “[Brady] was like ‘I’m going to be flying in from Ann Arbor later, but hey, how about that morning we go throw?’ And I’m just sitting there, like, ‘I was just thinking about dinner, but yeah, sure.’ I’ll get over there early and we can throw a little bit. That’s the only thing we really have planned.”

Welker caught 672 passes from Brady and went to five Pro Bowls during his six years with the Patriots, so the relationship runs deep. But Welker just wanted to grab something to eat when he got recruited.

“It was just funny,” Welker said. “I’m sitting there trying to have dinner and ‘Hey, get your ass up here and let’s go throw!’ I’m like ‘Geez, man, he’s going to be running like two-minute drills in his backyard or something.'”

Other than a few Instagram photos of playing catch with his wife, there’s been little evidence of what Brady’s doing to busy himself, since he can’t have any contact with the team at or away from the Patriots facility while he’s serving his suspension.

Having Randy Moss and Wes Welker available to run routes wouldn’t hurt.

Brady should be putting on his own football “camp” in CA or somewhere far away from Gillette and inviting any receiver that was in the last round of cuts to come work out and practice with him.

Give the almost made its a chance to get better and learn and Brady someone to keep in game shape with.

Recruit-gate! Make it 8 games off (or just stone him to death) since he’s clearly violating “the spirit of the suspension” lol

Pats fans might want to check out that radio interview online, Welker was great and talked some about what goes on behind the scenes in Patriot land.
    See you Sunday Pats fans!😉

Poor thing probably doesn’t remember Brady got his brain scrambled in those six years. We all remember the brutal hit Welker took from Brandon Browner after catching an I’ll advised pass from Brady. Welker’s career was all but done from that point and Belichick knew it.

Brady is going to crush the NFL, win the SB and NOT shake Roger’s hand. It’ll be magnificent!!!

Great. It will be just like in the Super Bowl…Now Welker can work on doing full spins while trying to catch Brady’s off- target throws.

I don’t understand why no one but up a big stink over no contact with teammates. It’s a civil rights issue. Where else can you get suspended from work but can’t contact your friends during the suspension? What if a teammate is a godparent to one of his kids? They can’t visit the kids? What if he’s a next door neighbor and their driveways are next to each other? This would never hold up in court. Goodell really reaching to flex his muscle here.

He’s such a liar, he called him hoping that Brady did what he did, in hopes that if they get short with WR depth late in the season that Brady would put a good word into Bill, I guy who knows the offense well enough to pick it up in a week or two, who the QB is familiar with and who is familiar with how things are done….he would be a good option for 1-2 games if Danny and or Edleman goes down

  21. bencoates57 says: Sep 16, 2016 1:58 PM

Welker hopes he can parlay this into a tryout with the Patriots.

  24. granadafan says: Sep 16, 2016 2:04 PM

I’m sure Brady could find more than a few willing people to catch passes from future HOF QB Tom Brady other than his wife and some DBs to defend.

Favre was throwing to high school players.

The comment about Brady’s “off target” throw to welker in a SB would have actual been a good zing…..if Brady hadn’t engineered the largest 4th quarter comeback in SB history to win another SB since then. Jokes on you I guess

The worthless Brady is probably using this much earned and deserved time off to work on his deflating skills. There really isn’t any other team as unanimously hated as the pats and for good reason.

Unless you’re some obnoxious, loud mouth, alcohol intolerant light weight like MOST the morons in the northeast, you can see the clear pattern of lies, cover ups and deception. Belicheat and Hillary obviously graduated from the same school of underhanded dishonesty.

They all belong in the same sinking ship…

Fyi, Welkers career wasnt on the decline until he went to Denver. He didnt fit in the offense and was getting KO’d by passes thrown by Manning. Just like Austin Collie before him. Its funny to think about what could have been if Welker had caught that ball, although Brady’s pass was far from perfect. Regardless he was great WR for NE and him and Brady are obviously still friends. Another great Brady and Welker story is the one where Brady brags to one of Welker’s groomsmen that he had the Jets playbook before the game because Rex Ryan stupidly handing them out like candy to random coaches. A notion later supported by Mike Pettine.

Welker should have caught that throw in the Super Bowl. No it wasnt between the numbers but that didn’t matter, it was catchable. He makes that catch Pats most likely win that football game.

He knows it and has rightfully admitted it like a real man would.

Now watch Patriot Hater snivel and whine.

What could be sweeter than Brady coming back with his team 2-2 or better and fully rested?

  40. braz says: Sep 17, 2016 4:08 PM

It’s being in denial to say Brady isn’t one of the best QBs there ever was, a first ballot HOFer… but it’s also being in denial to say those footballs didn’t have air pressure adjusted at Tom’s direction.

I say Brady absolutely got his equipment guys to deflate the air pressure in footballs to his preference of 12.5 PSI. There is too much evidence that is what took place, the texts, “The Deflator”, Wells, etc. Brady didn’t like the pressure he was given in some games so he told his guys to make sure it didn’t happen again. That is consistent with all the evidence we have, including the text messages. It is also consistent with Tom reportedly insisting he “did nothing wrong”.

And I got no problem with it. It’s laughable to hear Goodell bray about integrity when it’s clear they didn’t give a crap about PSI…so Tom took matters into his own hands and I don’t blame him. As long as it was indeed to 12.5 and not illegally below that measure, and as long as they didn’t do it to the other team. There is no tangible evidence of either.

Should have been a fine and that’s it IMO.

Nah. 🙂 If this is what happened… we would know. This would have been front and center in the Wells report for all to see. Even Brady himself would have admitted something like this.

People can guess all they want that “something” might have gone on.. but there is no tangible evidence whatsoever that footballs were ever deflated illegally at any time by anyone associated with this team.

I repeat… no tangible evidence. None. Nada. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Even the NFL admitted it themselves in a federal court.
    🙂

Brady is going for 500 vs the Clowns in Week 5 when he comes back. If that stiff Wentz can light them up for 275, look the F out when he comes back
