Since Tom Brady can’t play catch with any of his Patriots teammates for the next three weeks, he found a former Patriot to fill in this weekend.
Via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, former Pats wideout Wes Welker said during an interview with WQAM in Miami that a call for a simple social excursion turned into something more.
“It was funny. I hit him up [because] I’m actually heading up to the game [Saturday], and I hit him up to do dinner Saturday night,” Welker said. "[Brady] was like ‘I’m going to be flying in from Ann Arbor later, but hey, how about that morning we go throw?’ And I’m just sitting there, like, ‘I was just thinking about dinner, but yeah, sure.’ I’ll get over there early and we can throw a little bit. That’s the only thing we really have planned.”
Welker caught 672 passes from Brady and went to five Pro Bowls during his six years with the Patriots, so the relationship runs deep. But Welker just wanted to grab something to eat when he got recruited.
“It was just funny,” Welker said. “I’m sitting there trying to have dinner and ‘Hey, get your ass up here and let’s go throw!’ I’m like ‘Geez, man, he’s going to be running like two-minute drills in his backyard or something.’”
Other than a few Instagram photos of playing catch with his wife, there’s been little evidence of what Brady’s doing to busy himself, since he can’t have any contact with the team at or away from the Patriots facility while he’s serving his suspension.
