Falcons close strong, beat Raiders 35-28

The Falcons had a 13-7 lead at halftime and a 21-14 lead in the third quarter, but found themselves tied at 21 with 12 minutes to go in Sunday’s game.

That can be a daunting prospect for a team playing on the road and staring at an 0-2 record, but the Falcons didn’t flinch from the situation. Matt Ryan hit Julio Jones for a 46-yard gain to set up one touchdown and the Falcons defense stopped Jack Del Rio’s latest roll of the dice when they stuffed Jalen Richard short of a first down on fourth-and-two from midfield. Another big completion to Jones set up a Tevin Coleman touchdown run and Ryan found Mohamed Sanu on a late third down conversion that iced the 35-28 win.

Ryan finished the day 26-of-34 for 396 yards and three touchdowns that did a lot to mitigate a poor throw in the end zone that was intercepted by cornerback David Amerson earlier in the game. Jones caught five passes for 106 yards and they got 139 rushing yards from the Coleman/Devonta Freeman duo. The only serious blemish on the offensive side of things on Sunday was that Jones appeared to aggravate his ankle injury late in the game. That will be worth watching as the week unfolds and the Falcons turn their attention toward a road game in New Orleans.

The Raiders will need to turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball as they have now allowed 1,035 total yards in first two games. Per Chase Stuart of Football Perspective, that breaks a record for most yards allowed in the first two weeks of a season that the 1951 New York Yankees held for the last 65 years.

If they can’t fix those issues, their offensive prowess isn’t likely to be enough to end their long playoff drought.

Well, so much for the idea that the Raiders were going to be a good team this year. That defense is awful.

Our Raiders defense stinks, got to be the worst in the NFL right now, i hope they start to gell before it’s to late. Fire Ken Norton, our guy’s weren’t anywhere near their receivers, and our defense was always out of position!

Raiders…I thought your D was supposed to be your strength this season? So Atlanta looked like the Atlanta team of what, 4 years ago? Well, it’s only one game, but that’s a start….that’s better than Jacksonville is doing. Who doesn’t want to play in Atlanta’s division…talk about having it made.

  6. ariani1985 says: Sep 18, 2016 7:58 PM

    Same old crappy raiders!

  7. mindset839 says: Sep 18, 2016 7:58 PM

I think the Raiders need to consider a change at DC. Norton just doesn’t scheme well and he can’t make adjustments. The opposition just keeps throwing over the middle and the Raiders try and defend with Smith and Heeney. They can’t cover and the league knows it! And what’s with rushing Mack in the middle? Del Rio needs to take over the defense or let Norton go and give the job to one of the assistants. This ain’t working!

That defense looks just AWFUL!! This is gonna be a long year……Sean Smith is a BUST!

  9. illumination666 says: Sep 18, 2016 8:05 PM

That Raiders offense will have to average 40+ points a game for them if they want to be in the playoffs. Goodness gracious what a sorry defense they have. Raiders fan should still remain optimistic though.

It’s going to be another long year in Oakland (Toronto). The Falcons are awful and got beat by a pathetic Tampa team. Losing at home bwahahaha. Just troll baby.

  11. hanspard says: Sep 18, 2016 8:18 PM

Linebackers appear to be the biggest problem. Ben Heeney stands out as someone who is constantly taken advantage of.

Raiders got hosed on that 50-yard Cooper TD when he got penalized for getting pushed out of bounds and the Raiders had to punt. That said, can’t give up 35 ppg. Awful defense.

The Defense is simply pathetic, i dont blame Jack for going for it on 4th, hell i would on every 4th that is under 5 yards with that defense.

Carr is off the charts. “If” the Raiders learn to play defense, this is a dangerous team!!!!!

Until then…………….buckle up and ride!!!!!!!! Because it’s going to be a bumpy ride!!!

Like B. Ryan, Jack is pretty much a DC that cant HC. Although, while at Denver, Jack’s D was average at best and an old sleepy cow could come in, over night, and turn the same players into a historic Denver D (Wade Phillips). Yikes. And who was his first HC fire, him at Jaguars. Wow!

Sorry, but men, Del Rio aint so much. He knows it, you know it and so does everydody else. Good luck with that.

3rd down conversion… at the 2 minute mark?

    Pathetic.

yeah Sanu was his guy and he left him to help irvin with a TE that he already had covered. That dude is either out of position or getting a penalty.

Last year’s defensive beef was Norton not knowing how to sub in the right personell.

This year it’s the single deep safety.. almost every damn down. Which actually dates back to last year, but it’s extra irritating in year 2.

  28. nflfolly says: Sep 19, 2016 9:15 AM

Seattle did not let K norton have the Seattle d coordinator job for a good reason. Fire mckenzie .

  30. milehighcityboss says: Sep 19, 2016 1:35 PM

But.. But… Khalil Mack is a beast and the best pass rusher in the league.. Defensive MVP who would lead them to the super bowl… LMAO.. Where are all those ugly raiders fans? 0 sacks for Mack through two games..

  31. radrntn says: Sep 19, 2016 1:47 PM

I can see the haters are out….funny how they only appear after a loss…..As far as Mack fan club ….hey I’m right here.

First off….there are 14 more games to be played. Props to the falcons they beat us. We were clearly out coached yesterday plain and simple. All I know is you can’t play man to man out on the edges if you do not have a pass rush. No doubt we are missing Mario Edwards right now. It will be a whole different look when Aldon Smith and Edwards get back ay paly on both ends of the d-line. For now I would switch to a zone based on the players we have.

As much as I like what Reggie has done with the team, it was very apparent last year Ben Heeney was the weakest link in the chain on the defense. Reggie did nothing to address this in the off season. (Reggie, Jack, And Ken all being LB’s you think they would know more then me, but I can only see what I watch, and he got burnt time and time again yesterday) I pointed it out again during the pre-season. I ripped on Heeney and Dan Williams, and got a bunch of thumbs down. Please tell me now how great these two look.

    Go Raiders….Go Raiders!!!

Seriously…you went there? Do you realize its been 32 years? No one under the age of 40 remembers when the Raiders won a SB.

  34. idiedpretty says: Sep 19, 2016 2:59 PM

Honest question for the Nation. Your new gods, Carr and McKenzie, what are their career records in the NFL?

  35. 3ringbronco says: Sep 19, 2016 3:47 PM

Great young team with loads of potential, particularly on offense. But this D isn’t playing as well as it should under Jack Del Rio just like the Denver D got better when he left.

Same exact amount he had last year through two games.

Meanwhile Clowney has a sack (lost another on an accepted offensive penalty), a defended pass and 4 TFL’s. 😉

  38. araidersfan says: Sep 19, 2016 6:18 PM

I hope that I’m wrong, but this team bears a resemblance to the 1997 Raiders. The inflated offseason hype certainly wasn’t helpful either. 😦

  39. silvernblacksabbath says: Sep 21, 2016 1:31 PM

Too bad we didn’t bring in Wade Phillips as DC!
