Get ready for the 0-2 gloom and doom

Get ready to have your favorite team’s playoff chances take a potentially fatal blow. If, that is, your favorite team is 0-1 and ends up winless after Week Two.

We all will be reminded in the coming days, over and over again, that only 12 percent of the teams that start the year 0-2 end up making it to the playoffs. This year, the Bills already have arrived in that posture, and 14 other teams need to worry about ending up there as well.

Here’s the reality: 88 percent of all 0-2 teams don’t qualify for the playoffs because they are 0-2 for a reason. They have stunk so far, and they will continue to stink.

Some teams simply had a rough draw out of the gates. Miami, for example, opens the year at Seattle and New England. If the Dolphins lose to the Patriots after narrowly losing to the Seahawks, it hardly means the Dolphins are done.

Even if a team starts 0-2 because it deserves to be 0-2, teams sometimes get better as the season progresses — and they sometimes get worse. With the talent in the NFL bunched up this year, perhaps more than ever, 0-2 may not be the kiss of death.

History tells us that, for 12 percent, it won’t be. And that’s because 88 percent of all 0-2 teams are just getting warmed up on their way to a season to forget.

’93 Cowboys started 0-2, ended up Super Bowl Champs🙂

Here’s hoping the Cardinals can lay a beating on the Bills next weekend.

If the Cards can score enough points, it surely means adios for the Bill’s new offensive coordinator.

    Dolphins will manhandle Pats.

The Bills are 0 & 2, but they may have a bigger problem.

Their next two opponents are the Cardinals & Patriots. So 0 & 4 is not out of the question.

    Their loyal fans deserve better.

    Fire Rex & Goodell.

It helped that Emmitt Smith ended his holdout.

Can’t you just put Buffalo in the title ?? That’s what this comes down too.

    THANK YOU FLORIO.

I was thinking about this all yesterday when someone mentioned that 12% figure. Its such a sweeping generalization that doesn’t take into account an infinite number of other factors.

Some good teams need to get warmed up or get their stuff together.

Percentages are low for 0-2 teams to make the playoffs; however, the data is significantly skewed thanks to a grand total of ZERO teams from 2009-2012 who made the playoffs after starting 0-2 (run on sentences, anyone?). The last 3 years have been somewhat better — 4 teams out of 24 who started 0-2 made the playoffs (’15 Texans & Seahawks, ’14 Colts, and ’13 Panthers). This at least bumps the percentages back up to 16 2/3% from the overall 12%. Basically goes from 1-8 odds to 1-6. Good enough for the bookies in Vegas so if I’m a HC I teach recent history, no?

Better “Buc up” cardinals. Seeing it personally here in phoenix the bucs have the fire your team had two years ago but now lack. The valley here is on edge so much that blame us flying everywhere. Coaches blame players. Media is blaming fans for blaming the media, like in the local paper today. Cardinals opportunity was then. Now it is despair. Bucs will roll.

If 0-2 is doom and gloom, what is 0-16?

    Sincerely,
    The Cleveland Browns

If 0-2 is doom and gloom, 0-16 is DEFCON 5.

“With the talent in the NFL bunched up this year, perhaps more than ever, 0-2 may not be the kiss of death.”

Unless you’re the Buffalo Bills with their schedule, no QB and HC Wrecks Ryan.

If you have to go back to 1993 for a told you so stat, you are pathetic. Jerry Jones is going to the Gloryhole show after the Skins whoop the Boys today.

Mr. Florio are secretly becoming a Dolphins fan? Or is your objective writing skills improving at a rapid pace? Either way, keep up the good work!

  15. bondlake says: Sep 18, 2016 9:48 AM

Here’s hoping that the Bills continue to lose until both the Ryan boys get fired.

I’ve seen enough of that long-haired freak defensive coordinator and the blowhard head coach.

The people of Buffalo deserve better.

The percentage for 1-2 is like 30 percent. So even if you start 0-2 and win the next one you can make your playoffs chances considerably better.

Only 4 teams that played on the road last week have to play on the road again and the Miami Dolphins are the ONLY TEAM IN THE NFL that have the first 3 out of 4 on the road how is this fair ?

I think you meant DEFCON1, not 5… DEFCON5 would be the lowest possible threat, while DEFCON1 means war has begun.
