Jimmy Garoppolo in “tremendous pain,” status still unknown

New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (10) receives attention after an injury during the first half of an NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, in Foxborough, Mass. (AP Photo/Steven Senne) AP

Yes, Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a shoulder injury. No, he suffered no broken bones.

But that’s just the beginning of the story. Given the various ligaments and tendons and tissues that hold a shoulder together, more testing is needed to diagnose the injury, and to come up with a prognosis. Per a league source, the mere fact that Garoppolo is in “tremendous pain” after the incident makes his availability for Thursday night against the Texans unlikely.

The question becomes whether he could play in Week Four against the Bills. Amind conflicting reports that he’ll be out six weeks or only one, it’s simply too early to know for sure either way. If Garoppolo can’t return by Week Four, it’s essentially a season-ending injury — unless Tom Brady suffers an injury when he returns in Week Five.

If Garoppolo can’t play on Thursday night, the next question becomes whether the Patriots add a quarterback to serve as the understudy to Jacoby Brissett. Coach Bill Belichick had resisted adding a veteran during training camp, pointing out that there simply was no one available. Anyone who happens to be available now will be coming in cold, unless they swing a trade for a guy who knows the offense but is currently with another team, like Brian Hoyer (Bears), Matt Cassel (Titans), or Ryan Mallett (Ravens).

If the Patriots pursue any of them, how much will their current teams want, if they realize New England is desperate? Moreover, how willing would any of them be to accept what could be a very short-term stint as No. 2. Once Brady returns and if/when Garoppolo is healthy, whoever served as the backup on Thursday night eventually would be cut, most likely.

Free agents who have some knowledge of the system include Ryan Lindley and Matt Flynn. However, neither were impressive in short stints with the team more than a year ago.

Boomer Esiason of CBS apparently has suggested that the Patriots pursue quarterback Peyton Manning. But there are two problems with that. First, he currently is property of the Broncos, who would have to release him before he could join the Patriots, which would slow the process down until 4:00 p.m. ET Monday at the earliest. Second, after Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater tore an ACL, PFT reported that Manning is done.

If he’s in that much pain, then you’ll not see him again this year.

  8. the8man says: Sep 18, 2016 7:51 PM

    Brissett. Go with him.

He knows the system. If he fails, its because he’s rookie. If he shines, he becomes a viable backup or a solution for another team.

    It’s a win-win.

Sign Jake Coker or any other undrafted QB from this year’s draft class. The Patriots system is so great, we can have success with anyone at the QB position. In Belichick we trust.

  16. edelmanfanclub says: Sep 18, 2016 7:59 PM

I highly doubt Belichick trades a pick for a 2 week backup. He’ll sign a QB since those guys arent available. Cassel or Hoyer would be signed tomorrow if they were available for no compensation. I dont think there is one QB on the PS nor was there one in camp. My guess is he signs Ryan Lindley or Matt Flynn, both who were with the team last year briefly. As was Garrett Gilbert but hes lacking the experience that Lindley and Flynn have. He could sign a guy who has familiarity playing in a similar system as his. He did this with Testaverde in 06 (Vinny was his QB in Cleveland). He could also sign a guy who has previously played under McDaniels or he could grab someone who played for Bill OBrien (former OC now HC in Houston, who he happens to be playing this week). My guess is he signs a respectable veteran QB for two weeks who he thinks can hold a clipboard while Brissett starts against Houston and the Bills. Charlie Whitehurst comes to mind. Then again this is Bill Belichick, he’ll probably do something crazy like go with 1 QB. Whatever he does I am sure will probably be the right choice.

This clown, or one just like him, was mouthing off at the bar today with the same diatribe. Once again losers, if it were the system, it would have worked for McDaniels in Denver and St. Louis. It takes good coaching, good players, and a very very good QB to win in the NFL, to say nothing of winning as regularly as the Patriots do.

They might as well give Brissett a couple of games – I’d like to see Edelman as his backup (and Amendola can throw too) but I guess Matt Flynn (at last year’s Pats camp as contingency cover for Brady) is the obvious choice as vet support for Brissett.

  24. capecotton says: Sep 18, 2016 8:13 PM

It’s too bad they can’t do wink-wink-nudge-nudge under the table deals like Elway and Jerry Jones did in the Sanchez collusion deal.

I do like the idea of Ryan Lindley, if he’s ready. Makes sense. I don’t think anyone in the locker room liked Matt Flynn. At all.

  25. thomasreilly says: Sep 18, 2016 8:14 PM

There is no way a QB comes in and contributes on a short week with a game on Thursday, and there is no way they carry 4 QBs on the roster all season (or even 3 if Garrapolo ends up on the IR. So why trade for a QB? I wouldn’t be surprised if they hold with just Brisset, but they might bring in a Ricky Stanzi of Matt Simms type to back up for a week or two…The Patriots will have to free up a roster spot for Brady, so perhaps they sign a street free agent for a week or two and then waive the player to activate Tom.

  26. bencoates57 says: Sep 18, 2016 8:14 PM

Hey, 2-2 is the worst that can happen after a suspension to your HOF QB and your second stringer. NOT too bad.

This Miami game was the one that kept me up nights over the offseason. I didn’t see how Gatopology (my auto fill rerecommendation) would throw even one TD on this defense. But he through 3 in less than 1.5 quarters.

Jimmy Garropolo’s success and Matt Cassell going 11-5 should be enough to show anyone who thinks Brady is anything above average that he’s not. It’s a great system, and the QB isn’t asked to do much, just quick 3 step drops and unload short passes. There’s a reason why Brady was drafted in the 6th round. Slow, average arm. Most overrated player in the history of pro sports. Can’t argue with the numbers folks.

“Brady has played in multiple offenses — running game dominated, deep threat dominated, spread offenses, twin tight end based offenses — and won in ALL of them.”
“He’s the antithesis of a system quarterback.”
“He can win with any personnel, in any system”

“Tom Brady is a LOT more than a “system” quarterback.”
“He’s won under three different Offensive Coordinators – Weis, McDaniels and O’Brien.”
“Brady has won with every type of personnel, too!”

I believe in our system and in Belichick that’s why I say a high schooler can start at QB and have success. But you keep doubting the system.

    ———-
Your schtick is old and tired son. ManningsArmy invented it and played it well. You….not so much. Come back when you have something original.

Where are all the silly trolls that were predicting a 0 – 4 start for the Patriots once the NFL used the weather as an excuse to suspend Brady?

    ———
These are the same trolls the claimed the Pats would lead the league in fumbles last season….

Also the same trolls that the marketing experts have research to show that comprise their target market and also watch NFL games and is why the rest of us have to sit through irrelevant commercials about blue pills that are directed at the trolls.

They are not playing an offensive juggernaut on Thursday. Next man up. Brissett looks like he can play and the team will rally around him.

I loved what Bennett said about having fun and Belichick praising his blocking.

I vote for Blunt to be backup QB in an empty backfield shotgun with three tight ends.

  68. tigerlilac says: Sep 18, 2016 10:33 PM

Blount might be the most understed player in the NFL.

I find it hysterical that I still own that much space in your simple mind. Fellow PFT posters, this is a Steelroids fans that used to post under Francos Italian Army . I find it a compliment that someone in his basement would create a user name in reference to me.

The mortgage is due Frankie and Brady will collect when the Patriots come to Pittsburgh.

    LOL at you frankie!

Where? That sleepy lace is called “Indianapolis” and THEY seem to be on the way to 0-4.

Easiest 4-0 start in team history. Won’t even be challenged by Houston.

Tommy, Jimmy, this other guy… what’s the difference? Tried to tell you it’s been the system all along, not some 6th round Michigan mediocrity who suddenly shines in the NFL. The Patsies will plug in another interchangeable part, no biggie.

You tried but you FAILED. And I did not see you saying that, and you did not tell it to me. You failed to tell me TB12 was actually only a system QB since his days at Michigan. And you failed at many other things and have failed at your life. It’s time for a new profession and new recreational activity besides football so you don’t fail again.

Just give the Pats their Superbowl trophy and call it day… So much respect for Bill Belichick when you look at what he has done with a team without Brady, Gronk among others. He’s the best coach of all time, hands down.

I feel so bad for Garoppolo. As a Dolphins fan, him getting hurt was a huge reason we weren’t curb stomped, but he was playing so well these last two games and it sucks to see it end because of an injury.

In the end, I’m not even that mad about today. I’ve never seen Tannehill as determined as he was in the second half today. Gase has taken the training wheels off and he’s letting Tannehill do his thing. I like what I’m seeing. Is it fair to say that Tannehill and Jimmy G. are the future of the AFC East?

Matt Hasselback has a good gig with ESPN. It’s not going to be him. There is no way they can get anyone ready for Thursday night and Edelman is probably the beset option as a backup. He knows the plays and knows how to be a quarterback. If Brissett stays healthy, they can split these next two games and be 3-1 when Brady comes back. Those who hate the Patriots can laugh now, but when Brady, Gronk and Dion Lewis are back, that offense will be putting up lots of points.

2-2? I’d be very surprised if the Patriots aren’t 4-0 after their first 4 games. Bill Belichick is a genius. I don’t care who their QB is on Thursday night.

All I could think of at the bar was, “Man, you just can’t fix this kind of stupid.”

Only those that know nothing about football consider Tom Brady to be a system quarterback.
And when those no nothing individuals post that online they look really stupid. You might say that they have a system for looking stupid.
Enough about stupid….now for what intelligent people think. I found the following quotes online…
    ——————————————-

If Brady was as great as you all claim, then the drop-off in his absence would be immense. Instead after two games some no-name steps in and posts a 106 and an outrageous 130 QBR. The offense looks just peachy and Brady isn’t missed in the least. Heck, he even has a similar pretty boy thing down. I mean how cookie-cutter, cog-in-the-wheel can you get?

But keep on talking about how OTHERS know nothing, and wallow in your cluelessness.

Again, Captain Clueless, many of us predicted NO collapse, as Brady would prove as interchangeable a part as a spark plug in a Chevy. But you contradict yourself, babbling on about the greatness of Brady while trying to taunt people because the Patriots have shown they don’t need him in the least to win.

Stay thirsty, my friends. Thirsty for a clue.

It’s obvious you don’t know football. You speak of a “system” like it’s a bad thing. News flash, genius – every QB that has ever played the game is a “system” QB. Every team has a “system” that they use to run their offense, defense, and special teams. The QB had damn well better learn the “system” because if he doesn’t then he’ll be selling insurance real fast. So stop trying to show the world you’re such a football genius – you’re not.

“Per a league source, the mere fact that Garoppolo is in “tremendous pain” after the incident makes his availability for Thursday night against the Texans unlikely.”

So, this came from the same league source that said “11 of 12 balls were 2 psi short,” no doubt.

Since when are “league sources” called upon to make up embellished assessments of player status like he’s in “tremendous pain”?

The team hasn’t even completed the physical assessment or decided if he’s playing or not, but league sources” are releasing his status?
