McCown will have MRI Monday; Browns reportedly fear he’ll miss time

Josh McCown will undergo an MRI on Monday, which means the Browns might have to start Cody Kessler in Week 3.

Browns quarterback Josh McCown will have an MRI Monday after injuring his non-throwing shoulder during Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, PFT has learned.

NFL Network’s Michael Silver reported Sunday that “the Browns are bracing themselves for possible bad news” on McCown’s status.

McCown was holding his left arm or shoulder when he was taken to the locker room briefly late in Sunday’s first quarter, and trainers also spent extensive time with him on the sideline in the second half. He appeared to be in pain throughout the second half but finished the game.

McCown started Sunday’s game after the Browns placed Robert Griffin III on injured reserve. Griffin suffered a shoulder injury late in the season opener. The only other quarterback currently on the active roster is rookie Cody Kessler, a third-round pick last April.

Kessler struggled mightily in the preseason. The Browns added quarterback Kevin Hogan, a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs last April, to their practice squad earlier this month. If McCown will miss any time the team will almost have to add a veteran quarterback, but the pool of available veteran free agents is thin. The Browns are loaded with draft picks over the next two years, so perhaps they’ll pursue a trade for an experienced player who’s currently in a backup role if necessary.
