Patriots hang on without Jimmy Garoppolo to beat Dolphins

New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount rushes for a touchdown against the Miami Dolphins during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, in Foxborough, Mass. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) AP

The Patriots have an issue at quarterback.

But they have enough other parts to have kept it from being a disaster for another day.

Thanks to the running of LeGarrette Blount, the Patriots were able to hang on for a 31-24 win over the Dolphins.

They led 24-3 at halftime, but the Dolphins took advantage of the lack of Jimmy Garoppolo to claw back into the game. Garoppolo left in the second quarter with a right shoulder injury, and didn’t return. That left rookie Jacoby Brissett to finish up as the only healthy quarterback on the roster, and he only threw nine passes (completing six).

The Dolphins got to within a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots were able to grind out a late drive to eat enough clock. Stephen Gostkowski missed a 39-yard field goal which could have clinched it, but the Dolphins’ last drive ended when Duron Harmon picked off Ryan Tannehill in the end zone.

Blount finished with 29 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown.

For Miami, it was a day of mistakes (four turnovers) undoing what was a reasonable chance to win. But the Dolphins are still 0-2 after last week’s loss at Seattle.

Once again Tannehill fails in a final 2 minute drive. Has he ever had one since he’s been in the NFL?

Tannehill regressing rapidly, Mario disappearing again, Gase on the hot seat after an 0-2 start against a division opponent and already eliminated from the post season.

The only question now is, who gets fired?

Yeah so much for that scary front 4 for the Dolphins

Like I said all off-season…enjoy last place AGAIN!

Will we see this guy anytime soon?

Don’t cry to hard this season when GarCRAPola leads you to an 0-4 start and a 39 year old Tom Shady can’t lead you back from that hole. Also, enjoy watching the Dolphins walk into Foxborough and putting a beat down on you, then sweeping you in Miami later in the season. Poor little Cheatriot fans now get to watch your cheating team sink back to the bottom feeders of the NFL that they were before they stated all the cheating.

That game was closer than what it should have been, but Blount and Harmon saved the day for the Patriots a shaky 2-0 is still 2-0.

Sucks to lose, but I can’t remember a time seeing Tannehill as good as he was in the second half today. The defense deserves the most blame for this loss.

  6. finsphan says: Sep 18, 2016 4:21 PM

That Ajayi fumble killed it, they had so much momentum. Tannehill was carving up the pats in the second half. Unfortunately, it’s a game of two halves. Respect to the Dolphins for fighting back. Hard enough to beat the pats at home without 4 turnovers. Dolphins really have to figure out that run defense. Garapollo can ball though, looked good.

The Dolphins were given little to no chance to win at Seattle and NE, but I’m sure the starting QBs and the fans have respect for them. I know a moral victory means nothing, but this is a young team that has started over and over; year after year. They finally found a decent Coach taking them a step in the right direction. Under Philbin the score would have been 41-3. With Gase, we had Patriots fans having to change their underwear in the final minute.

    To answer your question, yes.

A minute left with no timeouts down a touchdown and gets within striking distance of the endzone with no time left? Not bad, especially when you look at his second half as a whole.

How is Tannehill regressing rapidly? Either you’re trolling or you aren’t paying attention. He was on fire in the second half and the Pats defense knew he was going to throw the ball nearly every play.

It sucks to lose, but if you’re a Dolphins fan, Tannehill’s second half is the kind of football you want him to play.

  29. shadywarrior says: Sep 18, 2016 4:43 PM

I’ll take the win under the odd circumstances, but I was pretty disgusted by the second half defense. You survive having a 3rd string rookie in at QB for over half the game to put up 31, and the defense lets them back into it and make it a heart attack. Absolutely can’t have defensive lapses like this for these first four games.

  30. chillaxbro23 says: Sep 18, 2016 4:47 PM

Losing by a combine 9 points against the best 2 home teams in the league with a rookie head coach I doubt anyone is getting fired and also tannehill was the only reason we where in the game idiots😂.

That last Dolphins TD drive, Freeny and I think it might have been Chung are running up to bottle up a scrambling Tannehill. Chung had the outside leverage and went where he should have. Freeny, instead of angling a little inside to box him in, stays right on Chung’s hip and runs to the same outside angle, and Tannehill slipped back inside for a near first down. You gotta be kidding me with that. Some of the guys they extend, like Freeny, really leave me scratching my head about what they’re seeing that I’m not.

  33. fatsolio says: Sep 18, 2016 4:53 PM

This game was close because NE defense went into the tank. Gase made adjustments and BB wasn’t able to adjust accordingly. This could have very well turned into a disastrous loss and the only thing that saved them was the clock. I have watched NE for 50 years and BB since he came here. There has been more than a couple times when he is completely befuddled and has no answer when the tide is rolling against them. Ya, he’s good, great even but almost blowing a 21 point lead with what the “talking heads” say is the best defense since 2003 borders on shameful. Great job offense, you won this one today despite the defenses best effort to hand it away. They needed to step up when Jimmy went down but instead turned into a sieve. BTW, what’s up with the placekicker? Missing extra points and chip shots are simply unacceptable.

The Texans become a real challenge now. If Brissett can get them to 3-0 and then Garrappollo can come back and keeps playing like he has its going to get the season off to a hell of a start.

Not to mention Martellus Bennett doing a decent Gronk imitation. Get Gronk back next to him and the 2 TE sets will be brutal on the other teams.

    ————————————-
We almost choked the game away with sub par play from some players. I’d expect Brissett to not be up to snuf, but the defense played uninspiring football in the second half. Goskowski chokes (for his pay rate) on too many FG’s, that should of been the end of the game. I’m also tired of watching McCourty’s soft play, I think he’s the leagues highest paid safety. He slows down and watches receivers catch 50-50 balls instead of laying the wood to break up the play, 3rd quarter about the 7 min. mark on the sideline is just one example.

  46. neilpountney says: Sep 18, 2016 5:51 PM

That is about as ugly a win as there is. I would have taken 2-2 for when Brady returns so I guess that is what it will be.

As big a Patriots fan as I am you are not beating an NFL team starting 0-0 with Brissett at QB. If the defense had shut down Miami maybe I would think differently but they were horrific.

I think Garoppolo looked pretty good I am not expecting him back maybe at all this season and that is shame for both him and the team.

As a Patriot fan I just hope Brady does not get injured now and if he does we are done.

Miami took advantage of an opportunity and nearly managed to come back I give them a ton of credit for not ever giving up.

The best part of a Pats-Dolphins game is watching Tannehill chase down the ball 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage after the snap sails by.

I never get tired of that.

  65. djscottyb says: Sep 19, 2016 12:11 AM

Hats of to the Pats, and Jimmy G.
They played lights out in the first half, impressive.

    As for the Tanndhill haters:
No team spots the Patriots at 24-0 lead, in Foxboro,
and expects their QB to win the game for them. None.

Our 3 RBs rushed for 35 yards, combined, with 1 fumble.
    That’s all on Tannehill?
What about letting NE ‘s 1st 30 OFF plays look like this:
    226 yards, 11 1st downs, 3 TDs
I’m pretty sure Tannehill doesn’t play defense.
$24 million dollar secondary that got torched by a backup QB.
    That’s on RT?
Must be that $40 mil front 4 that had no sacks and allowed 161 yards rushing. That’s got to be on Ryan, right?

Tannehill has issues, like chasing those bad snaps (face palm)
but seems to be the scapegoat, while others perform worse.

And yup 3 of last 6, 3 of last 13 (or whatever)
Still totals up to 99 games played between both teams:
Dolphins have won 52, Patriots have now won 47.

Wait a minute. Didn’t the only year the Pat’s not win their division under Belachek and Brady under center is when Brady was injured?

    The Pats are 2-0.

With the 2nd and 3rd string QBs.

Kids? I’ve been a Pats fan for over 40 of my 55 yrs. I know plenty about the game and have eyes and an opinion on the obvious. I will not be a robot or led around by my nose. The look on Belicheck’s and Patricia’s face seemed to be disbelief in what was happening. What happened in the second half was not what their expert coaching had game planned for.

There’s no mystery behind a prevent defense. This isn’t anything new. The Pats jump to a large lead and then proceed to get carved up in prevent. It’s a combination of the scheme and execution. Typically they keep the gas pedal down but that kinda hard when you have your 3rd string QB running the show with no prep.

    ++++++++++++

chipster only trotted out the one alias for this article and only used it twice. It’s understandable you might have missed the posts. Here’s one of them and it’s as off target as always:
