Chargers sign Griff Whalen

The Chargers opened a roster spot on Monday by placing running back Danny Woodhead on injured reserve after confirming he tore his ACL in Sunday’s victory over the Jaguars.

Woodhead is the second key offensive player lost for the year to that injury in as many weeks, joining Keenan Allen on the shelf for the rest of the year. They filled Woodhead’s spot by signing a player to help out the receiving corps with Allen out of the picture.

The Chargers announced that they have signed Griff Whalen. Whalen was among the Dolphins cuts as they made their way down to 53 players early this month.

Whalen joined Stanford teammate Andrew Luck as a Colts rookie in 2012 and played 33 games for the team over the last three years. He had 45 catches for 487 yards and three touchdowns, although may be best remembered for snapping the ball on the team’s ill-fated fake punt against the Patriots last season.

Don’t forget Stevie Johnson out with a knee during preseason.

Never heard of you, but WELCOME ABOARD!!! Looking forward to learning your name and seeing your number dance into the endzone a few times this year!

I thought Whalen was run out of the league when he ran that swinging gate play for the Colts last year. I guess Pagano is the one that should’ve been let go instead. Don’t let him run any trick plays for you though.

And judging by your number 17 jersey in the picture atop this article, when you were apparently a Colt, it would seem like you will have a new number in San Diego… #17 is taken, sorry bud 😉

Whalen is not great at anything but he is solid in many aspects. He played better in camp than a few guys who the Dolphins kept. Decent utility receiver.

And Brandon Oliver, who would be #2 with Woodhead out…

all these knee injuries are happening during the 1-2 weeks of the season which shows that McCoys training camp is not conditioning the players enough/correctly.

Griff catches everything thrown to him, good route runner… High intelligence.

smh. leave it to the bolts management to lose key star players and replace them with no name practice squad players.
would it kill them to take a few chances to win? There are trades that could be made to better the team and players on the sidelines that could have an immediate impact.
Spiller is one that comes to mind.
