DeMarcus Ware to have surgery Tuesday, miss a month

The Broncos are going to be without veteran pass-rusher DeMarcus Ware for the next month, but they hope to have him back for the second half of the season.

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Ware will have surgery Tuesday to put a plate in his arm to stabilize a broken ulna.

“Let us go get this thing taken care of and we’ll probably have a better answer,’’ Kubiak said of the timetable, via Mike Klis of KUSA. “Obviously we know we’re going to get him back so that’s very encouraging.’’

Ware will likely wear a heavily padded cast when he returns, but at least they know he’ll return.

He had a pair of sacks already this year, the second year in a row a fast start was derailed by an injury. Last year it was back problems which limited his effectiveness, though he was solid in the postseason.

While Ware’s out, they’re going to be looking for more contributions from Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett.

They have two guys ready to roll in his place, no decline in performance. This defense is better than a year ago.

He will need to take extra care that Ward, Stewart, Marshall and Talib don’t try to use it to smuggle shivs onto the field.

The defense has taken a step back. The d line cannot generate pressure up the middle like they did last year. The loss of Malik Jackson was big. The d line will be exposed against the Patriots o line. If they cannot collapse the pocket from the front, Brady or Garoppolo will just step into the pocket every time Miller comes off the edge. In the AFCC game, Brady had no pocket to step into to escape edge pressure. Even the Colts joke of on o line managed to give Luck a clean against Denver.

patsfan, your just repeating that diatribe you heard on the broadcast about Cam stepping up in the pocket because less pressure up the middle. The way he walked off that field I don’t think he’d agree with you. So why didn’t Luck step up into that pocket??? Losing Jackson hurt, but not “Big”. Its appears to me they can still apply a little pressure…

I have to agree with patsfan. Luck had a pocket and it opened up that huge hole in the middle when he ran for a first on that 3rd and 20 play that kept them in the game. Hopefully Gostis can come on and replace what we lost with Jackson but it’s probably not going to be this year. Need more blitzes up the middle.

Hate to see the injury, but Ware can use this time off to keep his body fresh and hopefully be ready for another playoff run.
