Mike Zimmer: Adrian Peterson’s knee “has calmed down now”

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson suffered what appeared to be a serious injury in Week 2, but head coach Mike Zimmer said Peterson avoided a major injury.

They’re still awaiting the results of an MRI this morning, but there’s some sense the news on Adrian Peterson could be something other than the worst case scenario.

According to Ben Goessling of ESPN.com, those close to the Vikings running back said they hoped he had avoided major injury after injuring his right knee in last night’s win over the Packers.

“He might miss a week. I don’t know if he will or not,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “Whatever it was has calmed down now, so we’ll see.”

That will allow a lot of Vikings fans to breathe, after seeing their franchise back carried off the field, unable to put any weight on his leg.

Peterson was on crutches and wearing a big black brace around the knee, but did not talk to reporters.

The former MVP, who has recovered from a massive left knee injury to rush for 2,097 yards in 2012, was off to a slow start this year anyway. He had just 50 rushing yards in his first two games.
