Patriots appear set to start Jacoby Brissett, with Julian Edelman No. 2

FOXBORO, MA - OCTOBER 25: Head coach Bill Belichick reacts with Julian Edelman #11 of the New England Patriots during the fourth quarter against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium on October 25, 2015 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images) Getty Images

Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to miss Thursday night’s game with a shoulder injury, which means rookie Jacoby Brissett is the only healthy quarterback on the roster while Tom Brady is suspended.

And yet Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Patriots do not plan on adding another quarterback.

That apparently means that Bill Belichick is comfortable with Brissett as the starter and receiver Julian Edelman, a college quarterback, as the backup.

If Brissett gets hurt during Thursday night’s game, the Patriots would be running some interesting plays: Edelman would struggle to run an NFL passing offense, and presumably the Patriots would have to adjust by running more of a college-style spread offense than what they run now.

Still, Edelman knows the Patriots’ offense well, and Belichick apparently thinks anyone the Patriots could bring in today would struggle to get up to speed well enough to run the offense any better than Edelman could on Thursday. So Brissett will start, Edelman will back him up, and those will be the Patriots’ only options.

Belichick has moved from regular chess to fourth dimensional chess. Don’t be surprised if you see an oddly young looking Doug Flutie at WR.

  2. Seprix says: Sep 19, 2016 2:37 PM

Who cares if the Patriots lose their next two games? Seriously, who cares? The rest of the division isn’t all that great sans the Jets, and the Patriots can thwack them. The Patriots went .500 at worst. I see no reason to sign another QB for only two weeks.

  3. 1gallon says: Sep 19, 2016 2:38 PM

I like that move. If J.G. is expected to need 10 days to recover (as is being reported), he will be ready for the Pat’s following game (10/2 vs. Bills). If Brissett gets injured (or likely even if he does not) the Patriots are going to lose. Why cut someone and spend the money on another player if it will not help the situation.

As more than one Pats fan posted here at PFT, if they brought someone in it would be to be the 3rd QB behind Edelman.

And that’s the way it should be. Jacoby Brissett may have a short week but he seams to me a smart man. Bill will not let him do anything he’s not prepared to do. Let’s just hope the offensive line protects him for four quarters.

It may be they know it’s only one game and Garoppolo will be back next week. If that’s the case then if Brissett goes down and Julian comes on then so what. Beat the bills and go 3-1. Houston will lose some along the way. That tie breaker shouldn’t matter that much.

  18. nhpats says: Sep 19, 2016 2:46 PM

Out of curiosity, who was the last non-QB to come in and take over(except for a trick play)? Maybe Antwaan Randel El years ago? There used to be an emergency QB rule so that didn’t come up but that rule is gone.

It would be a hell of a sight, like when a positional player pitches in a blowout baseball game.

  27. oiler1980 says: Sep 19, 2016 2:53 PM

I could be dead wrong but I think it’s all about having to cut someone just to add a Quarterback that they will only use if someone gets hurt…

The possibility of losing someone on the team in favor of a 4 day rental doesn’t make any sense since they are 2 and 0…

    Just guessing…

    Go Pats!!!!

  28. shadywarrior says: Sep 19, 2016 2:55 PM

Makes sense to me. No need to cut a role player off the roster for a 10-day backup QB rental. Already broke even on these first four games, win even one of the remaining ones and they’re in great shape for Brady’s return and we can rightly thumb our noses at Goodell, so no need to shake things up now. Brissett probably comes out alive, and if not, Jules can hold the fort down and just hand the ball off. No game is a “throwaway” per se, but if they drop these next two, there’s no need to pull the fire alarm, so I can see leaving well enough alone.

That’s actually a really good point, Belichick could find some reluctant solace in putting up a stinker on the NFL Network. Just reminded me I need to find a bar or something Thursday night to minimize the ratings while still catching the game. So far this year I’ve only watched the two Pats games, and local high school ball on Friday nights. I’m phasing myself out of the NFL for when the Pats’ run is over and I can stop supporting this joke of a league. But the Pats are on a once-in-a-lifetime tear, I can’t miss all this just because the commissioner is a bozo.

Let’s be honest here. If these first two games have proven anything, it is that the Patriots can win with anyone at quarterback. I don’t mean that as a knock on Brady. It just shows how good BB is at getting the most out of what he has.

Now, if Terry Pegula can just figure how to hire competent coaches and front office personnel… too much to hope for, frankly.

  39. lifetimefan says: Sep 19, 2016 3:09 PM

Ok, so Brisett is the starter, Edelman is #2 who is the emergency QB? BB must have some other option for QB on the team that he is not making mention of.

My guess is that either JG will be the emergency QB (and the Pats will pray they do not need him), or if he is really hurting they will sign another warm body to sit the bench JIC.

  40. edelmanfanclub says: Sep 19, 2016 3:10 PM

I think if Jimmy G was going to IR, then BB would probably sign a QB but the fact hes ready to roll with 1 QB shows the injury isnt as bad as I thought (separation or bone break). A couple years ago Belichick had 1 active TE on the roster for a game, which I thought was insane. 1 Active QB and a emergency is way crazier, but if he doesnt feel like changing up the the roster for a possible 3 day rental, then so be it. Having Ventrone on the roster would be clutch right now though for that exact scenario. lol

“Seeing how mainly anybody can plug into their system and do good, which is a testament to their system more than Brady, it should be fine.t”

People keep posting this over and over and couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Not only can any QB not run this system, very few can. You need a very high IQ and football IQ and a very fast mind to process all the options.

If it was really that simple then all 31 other teams would have copied this system and turned it against the Pats years ago.

Keep trying to act like Brady and Garrappollo are nothing special. You couldn’t be more wrong.

As always, Belichick finds players with strengths he likes and adjusts him system to put a given player in a position to succeed.

This is why I love my Patriots. They are a TEAM! No one is padding their stats, no one is screaming “Me, Me, Me” and they have each others backs. They are students of the game and work hard with great dedication to win.

  43. harrisonhits2 says: Sep 19, 2016 3:15 PM

“Brisett is the starter, Edelman is #2 who is the emergency QB?”

There is no more “emergency QB” rule, it was eliminated a few years ago.

Ie if you have a 3rd string QB, he must be on the active, game day roster to play. If you’re inactive you’re inactive period, QB or no.

Or not. The Pats are 2-0 with their 2nd and 3rd string QBs. It ain’t the SB but that might be worth a block party in and of itself when you consider other teams who can’t achieve that with their 1st string QBs.

    .
Best case scenario : Brissett manages a conservative game plan, doesn’t turn the ball over and gives the Patriots a chance to win.

Worst case scenario : Brissett struggles in his first start against a very good Texans defense, but the Patriots get to observe whom they drafted in real game time situations.

Looking at Brady’s age, Garopollo’s recent performances, and Brissett’s untapped potential, the Patriots are going to have to be astute as they sort out the QB position for the future.

They could put an orange traffic cone in there and it would do about the same as the other system QBs… the guy above who’s claiming Garopollo is something special is especially hilarious.

The guy above who suggested maybe they should trade Brady before he loses even more value is probably onto something.

Systems do work miracles with QBs.

Illegal performance enhancing drugs work miracles even more with lots of players, and can even get you 6 tainted titles, as the Steelers would tell you.

Ah the “problems” of the 4 time World Champions🙂 With the 4 best QBs in the AFC East being Brady, Garoppolo, Brissett and Edelman it’s hard to find playing time for them all don’t you think?

    Discuss.

  90. qbarrel says: Sep 19, 2016 5:38 PM

The Pats have proven that they can win with anyone at the QB position – they are just that much better than the majority of teams in today’s watered-down NFL product.

Winning regular season games is different from winning in the playoffs though, and that is the ocean of difference that separates Brady from the rest.

  91. patfanken says: Sep 19, 2016 5:39 PM

Well plan B was an unqualified success, on to Plan C.

The fact is, due to the beneficence of 354 Park Ave, who gave us this joke of a Thursday night game, not guy they could possibly bring in today would be better than Edelman with only the one practice and one walk thru teams get before this game.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Josh and his form teammate GM Nick Cassario alternate being the scout team’s QB this week. BTW- If they determine that JG can’t go against Buffalo, then they WILL bring in someone later this week.

  92. motsuret06 says: Sep 19, 2016 5:50 PM

Tim Tebow knows the offense. Lord Hoodie should give him a call.

  93. bullcharger says: Sep 19, 2016 5:50 PM

Brady has started 223 regular season games. He averages over 12 wins a year as a starter. Belichick is a great coach and Garoppolo looked good for exactly 1.4 games before going down. The system is good, but Brady is great.

  94. harrisonhits2 says: Sep 19, 2016 5:51 PM

“if he were to play qb that would mean edelman has played special teams, corner (2011 season), wide receiver, and qb. anyone ever play that many different spots since the old days”

Another Patriot of course, Troy Brown. One year when there were a lot of injuries he played his normal wideout position, kick returner, cornerback (with 3 INTs) and I believe also played on special teams on the coverage unit for punts/kickoffs.

What an orange traffic cone can come back from 10 points down in the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl against the leagues best defense then maybe I will believe you.

If either Brisset of Edelman QBs the Patriots to a victory over Ryan and the Bills it would be the ultimate final chapter victory. How could Rex come back from that?

  97. howdydoodyisalive says: Sep 19, 2016 6:11 PM

    Who cares.

The important question is what to do with him on FF. He hasn’t done me much good as a WR, maybe he can throw for a TD or 2.

  98. tgadler says: Sep 19, 2016 6:27 PM

The Texans won a playoff game with third string TJ Yates and 2 games last year with a street QB. Neither of those teams had the benefit of being coached by BB. I’m a Texans fan, and expect a win, but the Pats pulling off a win in a low scoring game wouldn’t surprise me at all. They’re at home and BB is a hella great coach. All that said, seeing Edelman under center would be kind of awesome.

Tom Brady is hands down a legend at the position but I don’t think it matters who the qb is…..they are gonna win even if Edelman is the QB.

It’s refreshing to see a Dolphin fan actually post something that is not ridiculous.
Dolphins fans are unfairly represented under every Patriots related article by one Patriots obsessed Dolphin fan that uses multiple user names to spew constant drivel like its his job.

The NFL should just release the PSI information from the 2015 season so that even the dopes will finally see that cold weather naturally lowers the PSI in footballs.

Then the NFL can cancel the Brady suspension and he can play on Thursday night.

  103. eastbaltruss says: Sep 19, 2016 7:06 PM

The Patriots will be fine with the rookie and Edelman. Besides, why would Coach Hoodie want to bring another QB to expose to the Patriots bag of tricks. After all, the one QB who is most immersed in the Patriots bag of tricks ( including deflating footballs) will be back in a couple of weeks.

  104. graylingskies says: Sep 19, 2016 7:12 PM

Jacoby’s another one with the “it” factor. Don’t go shortchanging him. I’m telling you all, Brissett’s bigger and badder than Jimmy G. and this dude can ball. It will be a fun game.

  105. realfootballfan says: Sep 19, 2016 7:36 PM

The Patriots system is that they don’t have a system. He’s the only coach that doesn’t have one. Brady has run like 4 or 5 different what would be called systems in other organizations since he’s been there, from a ball control run offense in the Antoine Smith/Cory Dillon days where he was a top end game manager to a deep passing offense with Moss to a double TE offense (on the fly I might add in the mdidle of a season after trading Moss) to the short passing offense now that is a variation of the old West Coast offense. Belichick does that and somehow gets players that at every level of the offense can grasp it and QBs that can understand it enough to fit into it. Guy’s brilliant. And that’s just the offense. When he has defensive personnel like he has now and had from the remnants of the Parcells era that he won with early, his teams are virtually unbeatable because he’s going to neutralize what you do best and also have your defense trying to stop something that they really might not have seen on film before. And somehow he gets that installed from week to week. Like even if you’re one of the ones who hate him, admit he’s great.

True. But be humble. You’re a missed FG attempt that could have lost against AZ, and Miami by all rights could have tied if not the game yesterday. Let’s not go having any block parties just yet.

    —————————————————————–
More importantly don’t ever forget that the only reason that Tom Brady did not play the last 2 weeks is because the NFL used the fact that cold weather lowers the PSI in footballs as an excuse to help make league parity.

All while the NFL continues to hide the PSI information that was collected during the 2015 season.

  107. factpurveyor says: Sep 19, 2016 8:32 PM

System QB – a term that was created to diminish the accomplishments of a QB that has inflated statistics from running a spread offense.

If silly trolls that keep mentioning “system QB” would just read the article above they would understand that the Pats don’t fit the definition of a system and would have to change to a spread offense if their wide receiver has to play QB.

  108. ibillwt says: Sep 19, 2016 8:52 PM

  109. cuda1234 says: Sep 19, 2016 9:37 PM

While everyone refers to Jacoby Brissett from NC State, he actually spent most of his career at Florida where he OC was …Charlie Weis. Maybe he had a head start on this offense and maybe the Pats had some inside info before the draft.

And this is why everyone hates Patriot fans – how can a team that’s been so great for so long have fans that are total losers. It’s really unfortunate that the world has to suffer with them for so long. I think that’s why most everyone (NFL included) wants them to finally lose and be a bad team again, so that these lowlifes can crawl back to the hole where they came from.

  111. tgadler says: Sep 19, 2016 10:24 PM

This PSI thing is so tired. Brady isn’t playing because he lied, simple as that. If he’d come clean he would have been fined and that would have been the end of it. There is no conspiracy against the Patriots. The only people who don’t seem to realize this are some delusional Pats fans. You guys are 2-0, without Brady. Quit whining.

So if Edelman has to play, do they just go wildcat the rest of the game. I’m sure he can still throw the ball but he’s not developing timing with receivers in 3 days. Just not happening.
    ————————————————————–
If you think Edelman hasn’t taken a few reps since Brady announced he’d take the suspension then you really don’t know Belichick at all. They had 3 QB’s in camp through the preseason, OTA’s etc. No “camp arms” were brought in. Ole Billy Boy had this all figured out before Goodell could say “g’damn Patriots won again!”.

    Pats fan here.

Most of the posts have dwelt on the theme that the pats can win with just about anybody at QB as long as BB is on the sidelines doing his magic.

WE KNOW how lucky we are, and we know that someday both TB and BB will be gone, and that someday we might not be anywhere near as good, or have anywhere near as many haters as we have now to keep us amused.

So – why waste time being humble?

    Humble about WHAT?

Obnoxious, arrogant – bring it on!!

And if the time comes that the Pats are no longer #1 on the haters lovelist and there is another team to claim that highly coveted title, I’ll be doing my best to contribute, but I will TELL everyone that I am a Pats fan.

  115. ibillwt says: Sep 20, 2016 9:25 PM

He’ll do “whatever he thinks is best for the team”.

And you’ll find out what that is when he’s damn good and ready.
