Russell Wilson downplays ankle, since he wasn’t supposed to play anyway

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson thought it would be another week or two before he was even playing, at least before his latest medical miracle which allowed him to play on a high ankle sprain.

The Seahawks lost to the Rams, limited to a single field goal (that gets their average to 7.5 points per game), as their quarterback was very limited in what he could do.

I wasn’t supposed to be playing for a couple weeks probably, they thought,” Wilson said, via Jayson Jenks of the Seattle Times. “But ultimately we thought we had the mindset we were going to get on my feet and move around.”

Wilson insisted he felt “pretty strong” even though he barely ran, and when asked if he had to adjust for the sore leg, he replied: “Not at all. I told you guys I was going to be ready to roll.”

Others had more glowing reviews.

“Russ just played with a lot of toughness,” wide receiver Jermaine Kearse said. “To have an ankle sprain like that and just for him to come out and play and show the toughness — those are guys you want to play with. Whether it’s physically tough or mentally tough, those are guys you want to play with. He showed a lot of heart to come out here and still battle. Those are the guys I’ll go to battle with any day.”

Until Wilson gets well and can run again, it might be more of a battle than the Seahawks are anticipating. They were unable to run much read option because they didn’t want Wilson to opt to run it himself, which he couldn’t really do. And without his mobility, he was a bit of a sitting duck for a Rams defense with a point to prove.
