A member of the Bears will be having thumb surgery, but it won’t be quarterback Jay Cutler.
Bears coach John Fox said on Tuesday that Cutler has sprained right thumb and that the injury will not require him to have surgery in the immediate future. He called Cutler “day-to-day” in terms of the quarterback’s outlook for returning to action.
Linebacker Danny Trevathan will be having thumb surgery, however. The team does not believe it is a season-ending injury, although it adds to the issues on a defense that looks like it lost linebacker Lamarr Houston to a significant knee injury during Monday night’s loss to the Eagles.
Cutler first hurt his thumb in Week One, although Fox said there were no limitations on him in practice last week and that the team didn’t feel the need to alter their game plan for Philly as a result. Cutler looked limited on the field against the Eagles, however, so the chances that Chicago will go with Brian Hoyer against the Cowboys on Sunday night seem pretty good even if surgery isn’t in the cards for this week.
