Jay Cutler has a sprained thumb, no surgery for now

CHICAGO, IL - SEPTEMBER 19: Quarterback Jay Cutler #6 of the Chicago Bears fumbles the football against Destiny Vaeao #97 of the Philadelphia Eagles in the second half at Soldier Field on September 19, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images) Getty Images

A member of the Bears will be having thumb surgery, but it won’t be quarterback Jay Cutler.

Bears coach John Fox said on Tuesday that Cutler has sprained right thumb and that the injury will not require him to have surgery in the immediate future. He called Cutler “day-to-day” in terms of the quarterback’s outlook for returning to action.

Linebacker Danny Trevathan will be having thumb surgery, however. The team does not believe it is a season-ending injury, although it adds to the issues on a defense that looks like it lost linebacker Lamarr Houston to a significant knee injury during Monday night’s loss to the Eagles.

Cutler first hurt his thumb in Week One, although Fox said there were no limitations on him in practice last week and that the team didn’t feel the need to alter their game plan for Philly as a result. Cutler looked limited on the field against the Eagles, however, so the chances that Chicago will go with Brian Hoyer against the Cowboys on Sunday night seem pretty good even if surgery isn’t in the cards for this week.

The Trevathan news is much, much more devastating than anything going on with Cutler. He and Freeman are the only guys on the Bears D who are winning their matchups with any regularity at all.

    Go BEARS!!!

Sprained thumb and he walks off the field like the team isn’t within 2 TD score? The guy hates football… he just loves the paycheck.

  4. jakec4 says: Sep 20, 2016 1:56 PM

If Philip Rivers could play in the AFC Championship with a torn ACL, this guy can play with a thumb ouchie…..if he really wanted to.

Hurry back Jay, watching you find ways to throw games is very entertaining.

pastor says our thumbs should be used to glorify god. the bears would be wise to follow that egsample.

Maybe they should start the Cutlet. SSDD…

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, right? Bears will do better without him.

I’m not sure why I feel sorry for bears fans more, John fox or jay cutler. I think I’d actually rather have cutler.

I am no longer a Cutler apologist, but how many of you geniuses bashing him for coming out of the game would want YOUR quarterback tossing passes around with a sprained thumb?

If you say you would, you’re either a liar or an idiot.

Don’t be surprise, if Cutler plays on Sunday night @ Jerry’s World. I’m taking the 8 points and the Cowboys. How About Them Cowboys!!

Missed most of this game but when I did turn it on all I saw was Cutler throwing the ball to the ground.

  16. Juan says: Sep 20, 2016 3:15 PM

The way Cutler throws interceptions & fumbles, how can you tell if he has a sprained thumb ? You can’t … he does both with aplomb … with or without injury.

As a Packer fan living in NW Indiana, I started dating a Bears fan this summer. I was hoping they’d at least be somewhat competitive this year. The Packers drafted a QB last year, and found a promising UDFA this year, who are both on the 53, but the Bears are going with a proven loser at backup QB? She got so depressed last night that she went home early. Thanks Pace!

  18. bspurloc says: Sep 20, 2016 3:25 PM

    .
Grrr Cowboys D not bears D.
I hope he plays cuz I picked up the Cowboys D.

I cant play them if a lame backup like Hoyer is in there throwing less INTs than Cutler.

Come on Jay!!! Do it for me!!!

I’ve been a defender of this prima donna long enough. It is time for the Bears to rid themselves of this toxic mess they call a QB.

A sprained thumb is nasty painful and for a qbmakes gripping the ball impossible. My sprained thumb took a year to heal because it was so dam easy to reinjure it playing sports.

Favre played and won a division title with a broken thumb. Cutler is a loser and the Bears are better off without him.

I’m not sure what all of the criticism is about.
    The guy always plays hard.
And the funny thing is he is rated higher than Aron Rogers. right now.
That wI’ll certainly change soon. The Packers have 4 games in a row in Lambeau coming up.

  29. Rolo Tomassi says: Sep 20, 2016 5:09 PM

It’s kinda hard to beleive the Packers won’t be playing a game in temperatureS below 40 this year.
5 weeks in a row in Lambow to prepare for some easy indoor games .

Really? I guess it might be harder to throw a football with a torn ACL if, oh I dunno, you try to throw with your knee.

But otherwise, a sprained thumb is going to make it much more difficult to grip a football – much less throw one.

    Sheesh. Even I think Cutler’s a weenie, but c’mon. Don’t be silly.

  31. idiedpretty says: Sep 20, 2016 6:19 PM

Of course its no big deal. Take some time off Jay, go to Hawaii with the wife and kids. You are the biggest ego in the NFL! You dont care about your team mates, and they dont care about you. You wont be missed.

Hey Chicago, CUT CUTLER NOW! It would be cap friendly.

  32. natelan says: Sep 20, 2016 6:33 PM

Remember when everyone thought there was a rivalry between Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers?

    There is no comparison.

Rivers has never missed a game since Week 1 of the 2006 season, including playing an AFC Championship game against the Patriots after having his ACL R-E-M-O-V-E-D… Not just torn, or strained, or sore… BUT HE HAD NO ACL AT ALL… And only lost by like 10 points.

All of you bashed my boy Rivers for mouthing-off at Cutler on the field, but can we all agree now that the crybaby deserved it?

    Thanks,
    -Chargers fans

As much as I like to believe the Cowboys are a shoo-in to win Sunday, let’s remember. The Cowboys have not won a home game since WEEK ONE LAST SEASON. The Bears are also 2-0 in our new stadium. We will see.

    —————-
Actually it doesn’t become cap friendly till next year. $2 to $3 mil depending on who you ask, as the last of the guaranteed money is being paid out this year.

Spend their top 5 pick on a QB, their 2nd round pick on an OT, get some upgrades for Dowell No-gains and the OL coach (shouldn’t be hard) and maybe Bears fans can start thinking about what .500 would be like again.
