Bears promote Matt Barkley to active roster

Matt Barkley AP

The Bears aren’t quite sure at the moment how long Jay Cutler will be out with a sprained thumb.

But they know they need more than one quarterback.

The team promoted practice-squader Matt Barkley from the practice squad, filling the roster spot created by putting outside linebacker Lamarr Houston (torn ACL) on injured reserve.

Backup Brian Hoyer was the only other active quarterback last week, so Barkley gives them a backup option for this week’s game.

Barkley joined the Bears practice squad after not making final cuts in Arizona. The former fourth-rounder has thrown 50 passes in his career.

Barkley is the best QB on the roster. He’s not great, but neither are the others.

Matt Barkley possesses everything you want in a QB, he absolutely balled out in his last pre-season game for Arizona. Dude could start

The Bears and the Browns are going to set a new standard for suckitude. Amazing the lack of NFL talent both of these teams have.

What is it about Brian Hoyer? Every QB has lousy games, but when he has one, he’s instantly treated as the second coming of Ryan Leaf. Here’s a stat for you. In 2013-14 the Cleveland Browns went 10-6 in games Hoyer started. Yes, those Cleveland Browns. In other words, they were at a playoff team level when Hoyer started. They went 1-15 in their other games.

I honestly had no idea he was still in the NFL. Not even trying to be funny about it.

Still not sure what happened to this guy between his junior and senior years. He literally cost himself 10s of millions by not coming out early.

Follow him on Twitter. He used to put up an occasional bikini photo of his wife. She’s unbelievable looking.

This is more about keeping the Patriots from poaching him from the practice squad than anything else. Good move.
