Former lineman says Washington front office the source of most leaks

Washington Redskins v Dallas Cowboys Getty Images

During a week which began with news that multiple offensive players were grumbling about quarterback Kirk Cousins, one former Washington player said the locker room wasn’t the source of most of the leaks there.

Via Jake Russell of the Washington Post, former Washington offensive lineman Tyler Polumbus said on his podcast that there’s a culture of leaking information to the media there.

“You know what the problem is? The front office out there doesn’t set the standard,” Polumbus said. “I honestly feel like 70 percent of the leaks come from the front office out there. So then a guy comes out and starts complaining behind the scenes [that] a player does it and it’s like, ‘Well, what are you gonna do? Because we all know that half the leaks are comin’ from the front office, so maybe you guys can shut your mouth up there and we’ll shut our mouth down here.’ ”

Polumbus also recalled former coach Mike Shanahan telling a team meeting about his decision to bench Robert Griffin III in favor of Cousins, insisting to his players that the information should be kept secret until game day.

“Literally by the time I got back to my locker and pulled up my Twitter,” Polumbus said. “It was a million different reporters saying, ‘Undisclosed player just told me that Kirk Cousins will be starting at QB this week.’ ”

Some of that is unavoidable, as the sport is so aggressively covered by many professional reporters these days. But players also don’t feel compelled to live up to any code of omerta if the boss isn’t going to.

Poorest run franchise in all of sports. Everybody knows this.

Not sure why these former players are coming out and bashing the team. I guess piling on is en vogue, even if it makes you look bitter.

I disagree. Little Danny Snyder – who is the only constant in that organization – has and does set the standard.

Of course, it’s not the standard most organizations want, but hey.

The dumpster fire in DC. One descent season and everybody thinks there is a turn a round. As long as Snyder owns the club unabated misery will prosper and thrive. In this case Desean Jackson, a known locker room cancer and a player recruited by the owner buried Cousins in the media for his own selfish contract reasons. Some things never changes.

Hopefully Kirk will look at all his options and the offense won’t get back to back false start calls every quarter we can manage to win a game.

    smh

It’s ironic to me that a former player is talking to the media about media leaks by active players and executives. There seem to be a parade of former Redskins coming out and talking about dysfunctional that organization is… now that the team is 0-2 and struggling. Maybe the team is that dysfunctional, I don’t know: I’m not a fan and don’t follow this team closely. But I’d be a lot more intrigued by these reports by former players if they hadn’t waited to speak up until there was already reported discord going on. Then again, if they were winning, would this subject even come up?

  13. makimaguro says: Sep 23, 2016 9:33 AM

Probably more common than not for most teams.

    ======

mccloughan is a good talent evaluator. he can build a decent roster, but doesn’t have the power to fire snyder, which is what that team really needs.

and also to change their racist name, which even if you don’t think it is, it can’t be karmically good to keep now that so many folks have noticed.

Everything would be just fine and dandy if they weren’t losing. When you lose, everything is looked at under a microscope.

Sometimes I get sad about being a Redskins fans. And then I realize that the world is filled with Cowboys fans, and I realize I don’t have it so bad. I could be a self-loathing boob and a bandwagoner without any football knowledge.

Saying it doesn’t make it so…if you have specific info regarding the front office let’s hear it. How would you like it if the front office said Polumbus is the source of the leaks without evidence?

Long time Skins fan and you keep blaming Snyder. He hired by all accounts a top notch football guru GM to handle all personal moves and has not been involved at all, Why do people keep blaming Snyder?

It is likely and mostly Danny. He has been the source of leaks in the past, so most likely the source of leaks now.

    ===============================================

Snyder gets the blame because he is a known meddler, terrible owner, a media freak, and the record of the team/ dysfunction supports that. When a coach insists on a clause in his contract that the owner won’t bypass the coach to talk to players, that says a lot about the owner.

Yes, Snyder hired McCloughan who is very good, but let’s see what happens in a few years before suddenly proclaiming Snyder a great owner for ONE good hire. Let’s analyze how much Snyder interferes or not with his GM’s duties. We won’t know anything until the GM is gone or if the Skins win a Super Bowl.

Before Mr. Kraft saved the New England franchise, the former owners (beginning with the Sullivans) used the late Will McDonough to bleep over players and staff whom had fallen out of favor. It was a strategy that the Bruins adopted as well. I’m guessing that in return McDonough would get a real scoop from each team for his Saturday morning columns.

I enjoy all the one word responses with the racist nickname of the Washington franchise. Brevity is the soul of wit.

  28. sgrvn329 says: Sep 23, 2016 11:48 AM

Robert Griffin was blamed for everything and now that he’s gone the dysfunction continues. Mike Shanahan and Jay Gruden are poor head coaches. Mike a SB winning HC was burnt out when he was fired by the Broncos. The same Mike Shanahan only had one winning season in Washington (24-40). And Rg3 was blamed for that to, and had Kirk had fail last season Robert would have been blame for that too. This whole franchise is dysfunctional from the fan base to the front office. So it’s no surprise that former players are now speaking about the dysfunction of this organization. But the one who framed as the problem has not said one word against his former team, in fact Rg3 thanked his former HC for giving him a positive review.

  29. moonriver22 says: Sep 23, 2016 12:08 PM

^The fan base is dysfunctional? Wow, that’s pretty lame.

Yes, it sucks to be a long time Skins fan, but that doesn’t make us stupid. And I can easily name at least 15 teams (including 2 in our division) that have much bigger problems.

This whining about Snyder is so yesterday. Kirk’s contract was handled perfectly. Would you rather be a Texans, Rams, Niners fan with insane $ paid to crap QBs? The Vikings are probably on this list, too. In spite of Norman Bates praising Bradford, let’s see how he does this week vs a real defense.

  30. moonriver22 says: Sep 23, 2016 12:09 PM

Oops, I forgot to mention all teams have locker room dysfunction, including the reigning Broncos. I’m in Denver, and the skill guys on offense are very unhappy about the playcalling. Real names and real quotes have been used (unlike “anonymous” reports that can be pulled out of someone’s butt!)

  31. amaf21 says: Sep 23, 2016 1:00 PM

Thankfully I’ve been around long enough to remember the Redskins three Super Bowls. Probably not going to win another as long as Snyder is alive and owns the team.

‘Thankfully I’ve been around long enough to remember the Redskins three Super Bowls. Probably not going to win another as long as the Patriots are around, along with Carolina, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Denver, and about five other teams’

    Fixed it for ya.

  33. officialgame says: Sep 23, 2016 10:11 PM

If Snyder owned the Eagle he would have been driven out of town on a rail a long time ago.

  34. demskinsbaby says: Sep 24, 2016 11:09 AM

I see scorn Eagles fans are still trying to justify Chip Kelly’s bonehead move to get rid of Desean Jackson by throwing his name into everything. Desean has been nothing like Eagles fans are saying, and maybe they should keep focus on their own team, which is pretty dysfunctional itself.
