Report: Dolphins bench Byron Maxwell

AP

The Dolphins will bench cornerback Byron Maxwell and start Tony Lippett in his place Thursday night against the Bengals, NFL Network reported.

Maxwell, acquired in a trade with the Eagles last March, has started the first three games. He’s broken up four passes and forced a fumble, but the Dolphins have struggled and the defense has given up too many big plays in the passing game.

The Eagles traded Maxwell a year after signing him to a six-year, $63 million contract.

Lippett is a second-year player who played in nine games as a rookie and has played in all three this season as a backup.

As an Eagles fan I was elated the day they fleeced the Dolphins in a trade that involved him and that other scrub Kiko Alonso……

Byron Maxwell benefited from arguably one of the best defensive units in the last 2 decades.

I mean he was a back-up at Clemson and was projected to be a special teams player in the NFL. His antics are up.

Don’t mess with Gase. He was free lancing is my guess.

  5. FinFan68 says: Sep 29, 2016 6:51 PM

Sounds as if he has the same problem many dolphind have. The effort is proportional to the danger of losing their jobs. There is talent on the team but it seems too many guys do just enough to get by. It would seem Gase has figured that out and just sent a message to the team. Let’s see how they respond.

He never was a number 1, Howard is playing like the number 1 corner. Maxwell does not press well and gives to much of a cushion ,always afraid of giving up the big play, which he does anyway.

    Howie Roseman should be canonized!

  8. irkjames says: Sep 29, 2016 7:00 PM

I was actually hoping Maxwell would play better in a scheme more suited for him. I was wrong. A lot of us were.

But I don’t get paid millions of dollars to make that decision. However, Mike Tannenbaum does….. Mr. Ross.

Maxwell is sooooo soft. Was soooo happy when Howie got rid of him. By by.

Tony Lippett sucks. We are TOAST…Bengals in a laugher..

Kiko has been good so far and we got tunsil, not a bad trade regardless

Going to the Dolphins wasn’t his choice. Perhaps he is just poorly playing his way back to the Seahawks after getting paid. He left for the money and now he has plenty of it. “Cash flow, All day.”

The only people who are shocked this happened are Dolphins fans who never watched an Eagles game last year.

  14. FinFan68 says: Sep 29, 2016 7:38 PM

Alonso was the guy they traded for. Maxwell was an addon that made it happen. The media assumed he was the main guy because of his salary and the drama with Grimes and his wife.

Except he was thrilled to go there and “excited” (his words) about how they were planning to use him.
At the end of the day even if he never plays another down for them it was still probably worth it to miami just to send Miko packing. Remember this is the fish we are talking about, whether or not it would have been worth it to a real NFL team is open to debate.

Howie took out chip’s trash and used buffalo and Miami as his dumps.

Maxwell doesn’t care. He got paid and has no problem telling us all that.

He was very solid in Seattle, no one can match the DB whisperer (Pete Carroll) when it comes to developing talent…the job he has done is nothing short of amazing…

Wow, benching a guy with a 6 year, $63 mil contract. Wonder what happened.

Glad he is your problem Miami……also love your uniforms tonight.

Thank you Howie Roseman for finding a team to take him and his contract.

  22. chrisk61 says: Sep 29, 2016 8:50 PM

actually maxwell is playing like a guy who was the 4th best D back behind sherman, thomas and chancellor

and who had 17 nfl starts at the time

maxwell and going to 3-4 were kelly’s biggest mistakes

  23. ampats says: Sep 29, 2016 8:56 PM

This franchise has been a joke since 1985!

Don Shula won how many Super Bowls with Dan Marino at QB?

    Exactly !

You got paid now come back to a real defense in Seattle where real coaches make you better

  25. jmethane says: Sep 29, 2016 9:24 PM

Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up back in Seattle next year and then turns back into the amazing player that he was with the LOB.

He’ll do better when there’s a better player on the other side and Earl Thomas can cheat to his side a little bit.

He is still the best ball puncher I’ve ever seen

Real coaches on the defensive side of the ball.
    2nd and goal to go…

The most shocking part was that they took on that contract. Throwing Alonso in was well worth it.

  29. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Sep 30, 2016 9:26 AM

just think, if they don’t cut him this season, the dolphins only have 5 million in dead money for his contract next year…..

Peanut Tillman, 1000x over Byron Maxwell.

As other people have pointed out, one of the softest players I’ve ever seen out there. The writing was on the wall, last year, week one, when the Falcons destroyed him in his first start away from Seattle.

  31. RegisHawk says: Sep 30, 2016 12:23 PM

Welp, now they know it’s not him. Who do they bench next week?
