Bill O’Brien takes over playcalling in Houston

The J.J. Watt injury diminishes the Houston defense, which puts more pressure on the offense. In response to that pressure, coach Bill O’Brien is rolling up his sleeves even farther.

Via John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, O’Brien will assume responsibility for playcalling, from offensive coordinator George Godsey.

O’Brien called plays in 2014. Last year, however, O’Brien delegated the responsibility to Godsey. A slow start to the 2016 season, punctuated by a shutout last Thursday night against the Patriots, has prompted O’Brien to add the task to his existing responsibilities.

The move may be regarded by some as desperation. Regardless, O’Brien is doing what he believes he needs to do to turn around a team that has high expectations for 2016 — and that will be expected to perform well even without Watt.

And now we get back to O’Brien’s true strengths as a football coach: offensive coordinating. What was that thing he was really good at in New England? Oh yeah, taking credit for Tom Brady all while being an average OC who couldn’t make in-game adjustments to save his life. Should work out fine in Houston.

“The move may be regarded by some as desperation.”

And by others as sign that he realizes he may have moved Godsey along too quickly and he feels the need to be more hands on to get the most out of a QB he was never even given the opportunity to meet with before Rick Smith signed him.

Yeah, and that 2014 season was one for the record books right? 9-7 I believe?

That may be enough to win that terrible devision but it is not enough to do anything in the playoffs. One and done yet again (if they even make it to the dance).

…would think you would need to improve the play of your dysfunctional qb…

O’Brien is adding OC to his HC duties, probably adding QB and DE to his duties by next week… The moves may be regarded by some as desperation…

The AFC South couldn’t field an NFL caliber team if they all joined forces.
It is the perfect parity of suckdom.

They all have so much in common, but I think that the most impressive commonality is the “High Expectations”.

“This is gonna be the year that Bortles puts it all together.”

“Pagano and Grigson are finally on the same page.”

“Mariota and Exotic Smashmouth will shock and awe the NFL.”

“Osweiler is the final missing piece.”

I do wish the Jaguars would grow a pair, and put the rest of the AFC South out of their misery, but I don’t see it happening until they get a real coach.

BOB does not appear to be a smart man or make intelligent moves during a game. In fact, he shown time and again to make the wrong decision. This is not going to turn out well.
