Get ready for Giants-Vikings with Paul Allen

The Vikings will try to extend their 3-0 start to 4-0 on Monday night, in their second regular-season game at the team’s new stadium. The guy who’ll be calling the game for the home team visited our radio/TV home on Monday morning.

Paul Allen, a guy you may know from such calls as “he’s loose” and “this is not Detroit” and whatever he said when Blair Walsh shanked a game-winner against the Seahawks in the playoffs, spent some time talking about the team’s chances of scoring a win over the 2-1 Giants.

I could tell you what he said, but I don’t remember because I usually don’t pay attention to him. So watch the video to hear his glass-half-full, purple-colored-glasses look at the Vikings.

PA is one of the best in the biz. He’s obviously a radio personality, but it would be cool if he could call more of the games on TV; he really adds to the experience.

I’m a die hard Vikings fan, but I can’t listen to PA. It’s people like him that make other fans hate us. He has no objectivity and is the ultimate homer. Hard to listen to this guy when he spews #hottaeks like “Vikings fans. The search is over. Christian Ponder IS our Franchise QB.” I know its his job to be sell excitement about the team, but he’s more like an 11 year old rooting for his home-team while ignoring any negativity.

    Purple colored glasses indeed.

While I love PA for his enthusiasm and emotion, he is such a homer that his football takes are usually terrible. Great guy, great announcer, but a definitely not an “elite football mind.”

  4. therealtrenches says: Oct 3, 2016 1:22 PM

People hyping this game as some sort of “clash” have forgotten that the Giants stink.

  5. ragnarthemagnificent says: Oct 3, 2016 1:25 PM

I think that this will be a good test for both teams and should be good game.

I expect OBJ to get his and I expect the Vikes D to make life miserable for lil’ Eli.

  6. beer4guy says: Oct 3, 2016 1:25 PM

Hey Norv, stop being so hard-headed. It’s ok to use the pass to set up the run.

  7. jmethane says: Oct 3, 2016 1:26 PM

PA is too viking Homer to listen to. Even for some viking fans.

Steve Raible the Seahawks guy is a Homer but objective at the same time. He straight called Richard Sherman’s first interception just seconds before it happened. Check it out.

  8. 49tinakane says: Oct 3, 2016 1:26 PM

Cant stand him one bit, over obnoxious blow hard, makes listening to the radio when hes on just about unbearable. Seems to only know about as much as the casual fan but champions himself a smarter football mind when he is…Miss the calls from Dan Rowe and Stu Voight

Good announcer! I’d take him over wane larreme any day. GO PACK!

PA is a blast to listen to call the games. Wouldn’t want it any other way

There are Homer announcers…. and then there is Paul Allen.

  13. shaggytoodle says: Oct 3, 2016 1:41 PM

Look for Viking fans to chant for Robbie Goukd, after Blair Walsh misses a kick. The Vikings are 3 and 0 but beating slow starting Carolina GB and a weak Titans team doesn’t prove much to me yet, I need to wait 3 more games before I start buying the whole team.

The defense is legit and they have showed up better than the opponent so far this season. The Giants are so inconsistent you don’t know if the playoff caliber Giant team is going to show up or the one that drafts in the top ten. GOOD luck to both and come out healthy.

Paul Allen’s eyebrows look like UFOs circling his fourhead

  15. upnorthvikesfan says: Oct 3, 2016 1:48 PM

He announces the games for the Vikings. Of course he is going to be a bit of a homer! With that said, I have heard him talk negative about the Vikes from time to time. And when he calls himself a great football mind & claims he can’t see a loss on the schedule, its all part of the act. Or are some of you to gone in the head to pick up on that??

  16. jgat12 says: Oct 3, 2016 1:57 PM

All the hate for PA….??? Do people not realize he is hired by the TEAM and that he is NOT an analyst for the league or a major TV network? Why is this such a hard concept to understand? He’s hired by the team to be a homer for goodness sake…

  17. ariani1985 says: Oct 3, 2016 2:00 PM

    numberone Wisconsin,

you are correct, Wayne is unbearable, the ultimate 2nd place homer!

  18. frank booth says: Oct 3, 2016 2:03 PM

Worst announcer in sports. 32 NFL team announcing jobs, and the best the Vikings can come up with is a bombastic horse-racing announcer. It’s not even the homerism; he’s just annoying and idiotic. He knows little about football, so he appeals to Vikings’ fans in that manner, and he attempts to cover his lack of knowledge by being loud. His radio show isn’t much better, coming up with stupid little chants and moronic sayings.

Who says “Boom!” when the ball is kicked off? Fran Drescher or Bobcat Goldthwait would be huge upgrades over Paul Allen.

You’ve probably never heard him announce. He’s a very good overall announcer. The Bears had him for 14 years, prior to that, he was the Chiefs’ announcer. He did Bulls basketball for nearly 20 years, does a bunch of Big Ten football and basketball, and has done some baseball as well. Larrivee is one of the most versatile and well-regarded announcers in sports.

The NFC Championship game back in 2001 was my favorite Giants-Vikings game.

    GIANTS 41
    Vikings 0

  22. frank booth says: Oct 3, 2016 2:35 PM

That Vikings-Giants NFC title game in 2001 is still the worst beating ever in an NFC Championship game, and the 2nd worst ever in an NFC or AFC Championship games. Also, it was hilarious.

Nowhere near as funny as the failed product the Bears have trotted out each Sunday for the last 5-9 years.

  24. ruvelligwebuike says: Oct 3, 2016 3:09 PM

Mike, ask PA about the “worst football take in history” next time you’re on the show.

He’ll go back and play his rant from 2009 about how bad Aaron Rodgers is, how he’s nothing more than a big box score and that the division belongs to the Vikes for the next decade.

It’s funny because PA himself actually called it the worst football take in history.

  25. dcviking says: Oct 3, 2016 3:10 PM

The only thing worse than Paul Allen are those that take their name from stupid 80’s movies and tell you how bad Paul Allen is because they listen to him so often…

  26. mediasloppy says: Oct 3, 2016 3:23 PM

What a homer announcing games for The Vikings Radio Network…

He’s known for being a bit of a hype man while announcing, but he also is very blunt when he needs to be.

  27. aypeeswhippingstick says: Oct 3, 2016 3:28 PM

His announcing style is the definition of gimmicky.
BOOM! C’mon, give me and your audience a break. His cohort in color is even worse. The definition of arrogant. No one who came out of Notre Dame should be that pompous.

Great announcer and great radio show 9-12 on KFAN. Keep up the good work, Paul!

  29. gtodriver says: Oct 3, 2016 3:44 PM

I see that Mr. Booth is showing us (once again) his total lack of football knowledge…

    Thanks for the laughs, Frank…

  30. purpleguy says: Oct 3, 2016 4:30 PM

PA does go overboard with the enthusiasm and homerism, and I wish he’s spend more time describing the actual action on the field than going nuts; however, seeing as how most folks usually only end up listening to 1-2 games on the radio anyhow, who really gives a rip? The schtick works fine for his daily radio show.

I guess life must be pretty sad directly east of Minnesota…

Oh. You should probably save that information for the Packer fans.

Was that the season before or after they won the Super Bowl?

The Vikings are 0-4 in Super Bowls and haven’t been in one in 39 years.
