Jim Caldwell not discussing his job security

For much of last season, Lions coach Jim Caldwell would spend part of his press conferences fielding questions about his job security.

Caldwell kept his job after Bob Quinn was hired as the team’s new General Manager and last year’s experience gives him something to fall back on now that the Lions are off to a 1-3 start this season. Caldwell is getting the same kinds of questions and he’s giving the same kinds of answers.

Caldwell wouldn’t say whether he’s had any conversations with Quinn or ownership about his job security and added that he’s not spending much time worrying about something he can’t control.

“Yeah, well, that’s something I can’t control, in that regard,” Caldwell said, via the Detroit News. “All I can do is tell you is this same group of men knows how to get things turned around the right way. We have players who are good enough players to get it done. We just have to do a better job.”

Caldwell and the Lions started 1-7 last year before finishing 6-2 to make the case for Caldwell keeping his job. There’s more time for Detroit to turn things around this season, although too many more losses may make the Lions consider looking to a coach who doesn’t take quite as long to get his team moving in the right direction.
