Tyrann Mathieu wants to play the slot again

Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu made it back to the field for the start of this season after tearing his ACL last year, but he hasn’t been back in the role he played when he made his most impact in past seasons.

Mathieu has spent most of his time playing a deep safety spot early this year, but he’d like to get back to seeing more action as a slot corner. It was an effective spot for Mathieu before his injury and he said Monday that he felt it was time to get back into his old role.

“I’m looking forward to what the coaches have for me, but If I’ve got anything to say about it, I’ll be back in my normal spot,” Mathieu said, via Cards Wire. “I’m ready to cut it loose. I think it’s time for me to get back to what I’m doing.”

The Cardinals have been using Tyvon Branch in the slot, but Branch hurt his groin in Sunday’s loss to the Rams. That may make a move back for Mathieu more likely when the Cardinals hit Santa Clara on Thursday night.

John Clayton was on the sideline during the Cards game. On the radio today he said Honeybadger looked like a shell of his former self…like he looked 35 years old.

Got to love it when players start making the decisions for the Head Coach…happens all the time in New England – that’s why Belichick is so successful – the inmates run the asylum up there! Happens a lot in Pittsburgh and Denver too!

Let ballers ball. The man is asking to put up or shut up. Trade him to my Bears. We need more football players. Label him a shell now. He’s coming off an ACL. Come find him at the end of the year and next year…
