Aaron Donald remembers Rex Ryan’s words well

Getty Images

When the Rams host the Bills on Sunday, one player will find a little extra meaning in the contest.

Two years ago, when Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald qualified for the Pro Bowl over Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, former Jets coach Rex Ryan complained about the move, not by building up Richardson but by taking shots at Donald.

Ryan said at the time he was “kind of shocked” by Donald’s selection over Richardson, and then Ryan said this: “If it kept him out of the Pro Bowl because some guy had ‘X’ amount of sacks, and that guy can’t hold his jock as a player, to be honest with you, I think that’s kind of strange to me.”

A source with knowledge of Donald’s position on the matter tells PFT that the comments “struck a chord” with Donald, and that Donald keenly remembers what Ryan said.

So look for Donald to have extra motivation on Sunday — and look for Donald and Ryan to be asked about Ryan’s comments in the days leading up to the game.

Richardson was better then, and Donald is better now. Rex was an idiot then, and Rex is an idiot now

Rex is a moron if he sees Donald as behind Richardson.. Insanity.. Aaron is a housewrecker..

C’mon Aaron…the man is old and senile and his brother is fat.

To quote Apollo Creeds’s trainer in Rocky II…”I know what you’re feeling. LET IT GO! LET IT GO!”

    Does Ryan ever shut up?

  14. nords14 says: Oct 5, 2016 6:23 AM

The Rams are fools gold and everybody knows it. They’ll be lucky to get to 8-8

  15. ryann252013 says: Oct 5, 2016 6:51 AM

Such a dumb statement.. Richardson and Donald play completely different games they are not even comparable. I’ll take Richardson against the run but Donald against the pass.

  16. flbills says: Oct 5, 2016 7:36 AM

Settle down ,Aaron isn’t going to be an issue at all. Go Bills!

  17. billsbackto81 says: Oct 5, 2016 8:03 AM

Whatever Aaron. You’re not the player I thought you are if you let the comments of a blow hard coach get to you. Your coach is the same pile of dung without the mouth. Bills will more of spread to get the ball out and stymie your front. Good luck chasing Taylor.

At the time he wasn’t wrong. Donald was just becoming what he is now.

I wonder if the source that reported this story is the same source Rex had in NE.

Donald is probably the best interior D lineman in the league.

But he should be less concerned about a comment Rex made over 2years ago and more concerned that he plays for the team that has Case Keenum starting at QB this week. And a bills D line that has 10 sacks the last two weeks and a PO’d & Motivated Marcel Dareus coming back this week.

    Bills win 21-13

  21. ikeclanton says: Oct 5, 2016 8:21 AM

    Rex said something inflammatory?

    I don’t believe it.

  22. carloswlassiter says: Oct 5, 2016 8:32 AM

I love the concept of “extra motivation”.

I guess Donald was only going to give it 85-90% effort in this game, but now based on Ryan’s comments from 2 years he’s going to go for the full 100%.

  23. richndc says: Oct 5, 2016 9:15 AM

Rex is, the Donald Trump of the NFL. Blowhard, zero actual substance, with a legion of mouth breathing neanderthals who still buy his rah-rah nonsense. I hope Aaron has a big game.

  24. root4cleveland says: Oct 5, 2016 9:22 AM

Well…I heard that during pre-game Rex and Sheldon play footsie together in the back of the locker room…

  25. nhpats says: Oct 5, 2016 9:24 AM

The Rams have nothing to worry about. Rex and the Bills won their SB last week. Expect them to be back to their mediocre selves once again this weekend.

  26. schmitty2 says: Oct 5, 2016 9:26 AM

Donald is a wrecking ball. If you don’t double team him it’s going to be a long day at the office. If you do double team him it leaves the other 3 great lineman a far easier route to the qb. Basically pick your poison.

  27. blackbug99 says: Oct 5, 2016 9:27 AM

Ooooooo, another “I’m gonna get revenge cuz he said mean things” story. Dime a dozen.

  28. breesynbigeasy says: Oct 5, 2016 9:42 AM

    Aaron Donald is a machine.

    I’m not a Rams fan.

  29. bradygirl12 says: Oct 5, 2016 9:56 AM

I would love to see the Rams bring the Ryan twins back down to earth after the Patriots game last week. Aaron Donald should be instrumental in doing so.

  30. weepingjebus says: Oct 5, 2016 10:05 AM

Don’t take it personally, Rex devotes a huge amount of time to jock holding studies and scouting.

  31. jssebastian2014 says: Oct 5, 2016 10:20 AM

The only way Rex Ryan ever sees another Super Bowl ring is if Billick gets a HC job and sticks him as an assistant.

  32. g.yavicoli says: Oct 5, 2016 10:50 AM

    Cute story.
If you need motivation to do your job then maybe there’s some truth to what was said two years ago.
Why are we digging up something that happened two years ago anyway? What does that have to do with today and Sundays game?

  33. phillypcp says: Oct 5, 2016 10:52 AM

I would take aaron donald over any d lineman in the league. He’s on watt’s level, but he wreaks havoc on the interior, which is more impressive to me. Sheldon Richardson is an animal too though

  34. truninerfan49 says: Oct 5, 2016 11:00 AM

Maybe Richardson has better looking feet

    Not good news for Fitzpatrick.
Why ,did he get traded to the Bills?

  36. joetoronto says: Oct 5, 2016 11:24 AM

All it takes is a win against a 3rd string QB and Bills fanboys start thumping their chests.

All it takes is a win vs the Texans with a 3rd string QB and Patriot fanboys start thumping their chests.
