Manziel’s suspension ends, but his unemployment likely won’t

Quarterback Johnny Manziel officially is eligible to be signed by an NFL team. And so am I. Chances are we’ll both continue to wait for the phone to ring.

PFT ha confirmed that Manziel has been reinstated following his four-game suspension for violation of the substance-abuse policy. By rule, players may serve suspensions even if they are not employed.

None of this will change Manziel’s employment status. No team has shown any interest in signing him. He likewise has been unable to find an agent since being fired by Erik Burkhardt and later by Drew Rosenhaus.

The challenge for Manziel, a first-round pick of the Browns in 2014, continues to be complying with the substance-abuse policy despite not having a job with an NFL team. He’ll be subject to ongoing testing, and any missed tests or failed tests will subject him to further discipline. Which could ultimately be the final nail in his NFL career.

If he manages to stay clean and to comply with (and pass) all tests, maybe he’ll be able to convince an NFL team to give him another chance. There aren’t nearly enough competent quarterbacks in football, and Manziel would likely draw interest if/when he can prove that he’s gotten his life in order.
