The Steelers may have to get creative on their offensive line against the Jets this Sunday, so they spent a little time at Wednesday’s practice preparing for the possibility.

Right tackle Marcus Gilbert sat out practice with an ankle injury that coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday left him “highly questionable” to play against the Jets. Backup Ryan Harris was also on the side on Wednesday due to a shin injury and the team has Chris Hubbard as the next man up, but they took a look at one other topic.

Center Maurkice Pouncey took some reps at right tackle during practice in the event the Steelers have to keep shuffling the deck come Sunday.

“Whatever the coaches need, whatever the team needs,” Pouncey said, via the Beaver County Times. “I know the guys on this team are willing and capable of doing anything they ask. The next man up has to play just as good or better.”

The Steelers were missing left guard Ramon Foster against the Chiefs last Sunday, but he was a full participant on Wednesday. Linebacker Ryan Shazier and wide receiver Eli Rogers, who also missed last week’s game, didn’t practice. Linebacker Jarvis Jones, who did play against Kansas City, sat with an ankle issue.

“Highly questionable” is not one of the approved designations on the NFL’s new list of injury types.

I think that Pouncey is also the emergency option for the Steelers at left tackle, after Villanueva and Harris, even before Gilbert.

Keep in mind the Steelers also lost promising rookie tackle Jerald Hawkins to injured reserve during the preseason. If neither Foster, Harris or Gilbert can play, options are limited. Chris Hubbard isn’t a good tackle or center, he’s barely average at guard.

If Foster, Harris or Gilbert can’t play, things start to get weird. I think Finney moves from guard to center, Hubbard plays guard, Pouncey bounces out to right tackle, and Pittsburgh prays they get lucky this week. That might be the best lineup they can muster this week. I’m still going to hope at least Harris and/or Foster can play though.

    Go Steelers

This might be a good week to use more 2 back sets and/or 2 TE formations to protect Ben. I don’t see Jesse James going deep on too many routes.
