Washington is adding some veteran depth to its secondary.

Free agent safety Donte Whitner, who worked out in Washington yesterday, is signing with the team today, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Browns cut Whitner in April and he’s been a free agent since, although he has drawn interest from several teams, including the Rams, Panthers and Giants. He apparently was waiting until he found the right offer, and he got that offer in Washington.

The Bills made Whitner the No. 8 overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft and he played five years in Buffalo. He then played three years for the 49ers and two for the Browns.
