The Cowboys are adding a quarterback to their active roster, but they’re making him change positions first.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cowboys are promoting Jameill Showers from the practice squad, after converting him to safety.

He’ll now wear jersey number 28, and be a reserve on defense and play special teams.

Showers, who was once a backup to Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, eventually transferred to Texas-El Paso. He spent most of last year on the Cowboys practice squad, but was promoted late in the season.

He got some chances this year in the preseason, but was leapfrogged by rookie Dak Prescott.

Showers will make an impact teaming up with Bryan Jones @ strong safety, beating out barry church. Showers brings more speed to the Cowboys secondary, to free up Jones.

this doesn’t really make sense to me, unless they thought a team was going to sign him to active roster as QB and they didn’t want to give him up…

To IMagine thaT, collEge qB switches pOsitions in the pros so he can get on the field and contribute. Gee, is there anyone else that comes to mind who should learn from this example? Anyone?

I actually thought he looked pretty good at QB in preseason. Seems like a waste of good arm talent but I think eazeback may be on to something as to the reasoning.

Seems like an excellent idea to have a QB on the punting team and just run fakes all game long.

I can’t say I like the move, but I understand that a guy likes football so much, he’s willing to do what it takes to get on the field and play ball. But if they’ve been working him out on teams and as a DB, who am I to argue?

Nothing against Tebow. I like him, but he’s just a bit stubborn in that regard.

what is surprising is that he has been put on the active roster, filling out the 53. so who gets axed when Dlaw gets activated? signs pointing to Frazier but I can see some other, more difficult choices being made.

Non-Cowboy fans will think this is crazy, but Showers is actually a phenomenal athlete. Kind of in that Terrelle Pryor or Anquan Boldin mold. But I don’t think he can catch. Hence the move to DB He has some size though. And range. He’s shown it on special teams. Cowboys have historically had knack fro finding Special Teams aces.

Point is: This isn’t as crazy as you think.

Love the move. Showers is a very good special teams player. Barry Church is balling this year. He won’t be taking that spot any time soon.
