Jameis Winston knows he has to protect the ball better

It’s almost like Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston had a message, or had one drilled into his head.

Via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Winston made 11 references to ball security in a nine-minute press conference, saying he needed to “protect the football,” “take care of the football” and not “give the other team the ball,” among others.

“Teams usually come with whatever game plan they have, and it’s typically pretty good,” he said. “But like I said, it’s more about me protecting the football and not teams doing things in particular.”

Of course, Winston has thrown eight interceptions and fumbled twice in four games, so giving it away 2.5 times per game is something he can’t continue if the Bucs are to progress.

Of course, without running back Doug Martin out there to help him, Winston’s under more pressure to get things done himself. At least he knows it, or has been told enough to be able to repeat it.

Two things we know. First, Jameis is as big a competitor as any player out there, needing experience to tell him when he must not force the ball to try to make a play. Second, knowing local media in Tampa well, if Rick Stroud reports anything, there is always a personal agenda to make himself look like the omnipotent reporter when in fact he’s very small time. Taken together, Jameis knows what he needs to do.

He had a lot of interceptions in college, but of course those were explained away by the draft pundits.

Mike Glennon will have a longer career than jameis Winston

Which is the reason why he was not traded this year.

Yeah, he won’t last long… People can talk him up all they want and like the others before him, it will not become reality that which they try to presuade others about him……

Hopefully we have some better ball security tonight!
