Who’s the coach of the year so far?

We conclude the week following Week Four of the NFL season with one more 25-percent-of-the-way poll question. And this could be the toughest one yet to resolve.

Who’s the coach of the year so far?

That’s the question of the day for Friday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio and NBCSN, which gets started at 6:00 a.m. ET. At 7:35 a.m. ET, one of the candidates will join the show: Eagles coach Doug Pederson.

Former NFL fullback Jon Ritchie also will give us a call. So tune it in and turn it up and get yourself ready for Week Five.

Meanwhile, vote in the poll, defend your choice in the comments, and complain about any coaches who were omitted from a long list of finalists.

Im a philly fan so.i.voted for.our coach. Truth be told i wouldnt hate zimmer winning either. It took real stones from both of these coaches to pull the trigger on the sammy trade. Pederson had to say ok lets trade our starter and put our season in the hands of a D2 college qb th@t didnt have a preseason. Zimmers qb goes.down and instead of panic setting in he goes to work and trades for a guy no one really expects much from and damn sure have no confidence in and may have saved the season. So either one.is good. Big bill and jason garrett shouldnt.even get a mention because they had no choice.

It’s an expectation game of the media, not an objective award.

Belichick often deserves it but seldom gets it because he is expected to be great every year.

Not to mention the fact that they tried from the start to write his epitaph in Boston; nothing sports writers like less than having their ignorance revealed.

Sorry, winning the week 4 super bowl doesn’t qualify him as a candidate.

Zimmer for sure. Viking fans are grateful he was passed over so many times for HC openings in the past. I bet alot of GMs are regretting nor hiring him when they had the chance.

  9. minerslung says: Oct 7, 2016 7:24 AM

Im not a vikings fan but you really have to give it to zimmer at this point. Its very close with belicheck though. Hes always tremendous.

As much as I despise the Donkeys and their salary cap/PED cheating, Kubiak should get a bit more love in the vote. 4%?

Or is he like KC Jones of the Celtics in the 80’s where he just needs to stay out of the way?

  12. pastabelly says: Oct 7, 2016 7:39 AM

It should be Zimmer. I think Belichick is a better coach, but Bill is not above laying total stink bombs like he did last Sunday. Zimmer effectively transitioned quarterbacks and life without Adrian Peterson to put together one of the best teams in the NFL. How can you overlook that? I don’t doubt for one second that the Patriots won’t be a better team when Gronk is at full strength and Tom Brady is rolling that offense. That’s not coaching. That’s having two players who are the best or near the best ever at their positions. They make coaches look good.

  13. Mad Chef says: Oct 7, 2016 7:43 AM

It’s Zimmer this year. All due respect to BB and plugging in broomsticks with helmets at QB, but Zimmer has dealt with and overcome more than any other coach so far this year. Oh btw, the Vikes are 4-0

  17. marima07 says: Oct 7, 2016 8:38 AM

C’mon man… not even close. It’s Bill Belichick, who not only had to play his opponents in Weeks 1-4, but he had to do it without his QB, thanks to commissioner clown pants.

  18. All-American Voltron says: Oct 7, 2016 8:47 AM

Being a strong coach is more than putting a plan together to win a string of games, its about managing an entire group and keeping them on track to be a winner despite any adversity.

Just watch how Zimmer managed the entire Adrian situation last year, the growth of Teddy, and the emergence of that defense. And of course this year was masterful to lose Teddy a week before the season and Adrian soon after, and the Vikings haven’t missed a beat. But more importantly you can see how a foundation for years of winning is being built through Zimmer’s leadership. this isn’t a flash in the pan team.

  22. jag1959 says: Oct 7, 2016 9:27 AM

Del Rio, Kubiak, Garrett and Fisher have no place in the conversation with Zimmer, Belichick and Pederson. In another year Pederson would be a no brainer but what the Vikes and Pats have done under their circumstances is a testimony to just how very well coached they are.

    ^^^^^^^^

While I agree that it sucks that Tom was suspended for 4 games (unjustified in my opinion), Belichick had months to prepare for the 4 weeks without Brady.

Contrast that to Zimmer, who lost his starting QB for the season a week before the opener, lost his future HOF RB and his starting LT in game 2.

  24. tylawspick6 says: Oct 7, 2016 9:36 AM

    LOL

BB could go 19-0 and he still wouldn’t win it.

    Hilarious.

He’s essentially a finalist for the coach of the year every year, but he gets bypassed because the media is jealous of his successes.

NE goes to conf title games with decimated teams and uses B Squads, where most teams wouldn’t even make the playoffs.

Funny how Boston fans mock the bills fans for being happy about a win in only week 4 yet you can say you have ‘coach of the year’ after 4 games. But regardless, Belicheat is a good coach- goes to show how overrated Brady is. They are on pace for 12-4 season without brady, no INT’s through 4 weeks. Last time they had a whole season without him a career backup went 11-4 and only threw 11 int’s. Anyone can play qb there and do well.

    ————————————————————–

I wouldn’t be surprised if after he retires, there will be some sort of coaching awards named for him.

  28. patfanken says: Oct 7, 2016 10:08 AM

Lots of good candidates at the quarter pole, Pats fans, like myself will always be in awe of what Bellichick does in NE while drafting every round in the low 20’s or 30’s every year. And particularly this year for the obvious reasons

But this year there are other great jobs being done. Zimmer has already faced great adversity and over come it. Kubiak might be doing his best job ever in transitioning from Manning and coming of a long superbowl grind. I also like the jobs being done in Philly and Atlanta. Two teams that are vastly surpassing expectations.

Coaching is what made football such a great game. In no other team sport does coach have a bigger impact, and that is why we see the best athletes get beaten by the better TEAM so often.

But like I said, its only 4 games. In order to make a point, BB once showed the team a horse race, and stopped it about a third of the way through it, and asked the team, “who can pick the winner?” The point being made was that you can’t, and the leader can’t be known until the END of the season when you have to be playing your best football.

JDR for his week one call alone.

  30. In Teddy We Trust says: Oct 7, 2016 10:29 AM

I don’t care who wins coach of the year, especially when we’re only 25% of the way through the season. What I care about is having one of the best coaches in the NFL to build a team that can succeed for years at a time. That’s what Bellichick has done and that’s what Zimmer is in the midst of doing. I’ll take coach of the decade over coach of the year anytime.

  31. BoyzFan says: Oct 7, 2016 10:39 AM

    I think Zimmer so far.

I’m a Cowboys fan but I’m still not sold on Garrett even being on this list. I think the Cowboys are winning in spite of the HC and GM.

  32. numba1wiscosportsfan says: Oct 7, 2016 10:42 AM

    Zim. duh.

  33. patsfan4lifesbchamps says: Oct 7, 2016 11:03 AM

Zimmer has a better roster. Belichick had to win with unknowns at QB. So Belichick wins.

  34. thepackerpoet says: Oct 7, 2016 11:22 AM

Mike MacCarthy deserves this honor! We have the team to go all the way, and the best coaching staff in the NFL year after year…

  35. allight59 says: Oct 7, 2016 11:23 AM

Easy, Zimmer wins, you lose your franchise QB, the best RB in the NFL and your Left Tackle and go undefeated against some of the top QBs in the league. Most locker rooms would fold, not with Zim at the helm. When we beat the Pats in the Superbowl, it will be known by all who is the better coach.

  36. schmitty2 says: Oct 7, 2016 11:58 AM

I’m a Rams fan and can’t believe for one second you even put Fisher on this list. The team is 3-1 DESPITE him not because of him.

  37. section310 says: Oct 7, 2016 12:09 PM

Seriously, Gary Kubiak got votes??? I could win with that defense.

  38. tedmurph says: Oct 7, 2016 12:26 PM

I say Peterson so far, but we’ll see where they end up. Belichick, as usual, has no chance. The Pats will go 12-4/13-3 again, but the perception will be they were supposed to.

  39. toddc612 says: Oct 7, 2016 12:46 PM

    —————

Are you serious??? how many patriots top starters are on IR? Your “unknown” was Brady’s backup for the past 3 years. When he went down, your other “unknown” was splitting reps the whole preseason to prepare to play… Bradford wasn’t even on the Vikings roster until a week before the season started. Also the Vikings schedule has been way tougher than the patriots. Without question Zimmer deserves the award through 4 games.

  41. harrisonhits2 says: Oct 7, 2016 1:15 PM

Belichick and Zimmer neck and neck.

We’ll see who ends the year on top but both of them have done great jobs.

  42. tedmurph says: Oct 7, 2016 1:18 PM

Belichick had to win with a 2nd string QB, and then a 3rd. The best QB hasn’t played and best TE in the gm is in preseason mode, just being used as a blocker. Their best RB and starting RT are on the PUP list. Ninkovich was suspended. Arguably their best defensive player, Hightower, has been hurt. Zimmer has done a great job, but that D was in place last yr. They should have beat Seattle. They’re still winning gms for them. Giving up that much for Radford was a gutsy move though

  43. radrntn says: Oct 7, 2016 1:35 PM

What???? Because Vikings suck?? Wow. They’re 4-0. That’s precisely why Zimmer is in the running for coach of the year.

  46. limakey says: Oct 7, 2016 5:44 PM

Zimmer in my opinion, hands down. Bill belicheck doesn’t deserve to be in consideration. He had two years to prepare for this. Gronk is hurt every year and last year it was Edleman. He is just a coach, like everyone else, he knows injuries and suspensions are part of the game. The reason why he is always on the coach of the year list but never wins is because he is not trusted. He is brilliant at cheating and getting away with it.

  47. tralfaz1127 says: Oct 8, 2016 12:39 PM

Also when you have been caught cheating multiple times, at what time does the soul less media finally have a back bone and say someone should no longer be considered for any awards because he can’t be trusted to play by the rules.
