The Cardinals lost both starting guards to ankle injuries during Thursday night’s win over the 49ers. One of them apparently was injured more seriously than the other.

The team has placed Evan Mathis on injured reserve. Mike Iupati, also injured in the game, remains on the active roster.

The Cardinals filled the roster spot by signing Ulrick John from Miami’s practice squad. John was a seventh-round pick of the Colts in 2014.

Mathis, 34, spent 2015 with the Broncos after stints with the Panthers, Dolphins, Bengals, and Eagles, He started four of the five games in 2016 with Arizona.

He can return to the active roster after eight weeks.

I question what Keim and BA were doing when it came to Mathis. The guy tried to tough it out and played with a bad ankle, one BA described as “purple”. Why? Mathis is 34. You brought him in to help with the running game, pass protection, and to help Shipley who has never been a regular starter at center. Why didn’t the Cardinals give Mathis a couple of weeks off to get healthy? Instead, he was rushed back to the lineup and now he’s out for an extended period of time. Not good!
