Patriots up 16-7; Browns down another QB

Martellus Bennett caught a pass in the flats from Tom Brady and literally walked into the end zone to give the Patriots a 14-7 lead over the Browns in the first quarter.

A safety on the next drive — Browns quarterback Cody Kessler took a big hit on a sack by Donta Hightower — made it 16-7.

The Patriots scored on their first drive on a short LeGarrette Blount touchdown run, and the Browns quickly answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive of their own capped by a Kessler touchdown pass to Andrew Hawkins.

Brady is 8-of-10 for 129 yards two series into his 2016 season. He’s led scoring drives of 75 and 80 yards; Bennett’s catch covered 7 yards.

Kessler was injured late in the first quarter. He was taken to the sideline, and we’ll pass along an update when the Browns provide one.

Looked like the Garoppolo injury–hopefully not as serious.

Someone here will need to suit up as the Browns’ QB. Any of you guys in the Cleveland area? Anyone?

Tom looks oddly sharp while throwing deep with those regulation footballs. Almost as if the league’s science defying hired clowns really were liars the entire time. But we already knew that when he shredded the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

    Cleveland is bad!

At this point, the Browns may as well pull that drunk from the stands who’s been screaming “I can throw better than that!!” and give him a shot. What do you have to lose?

(Just get him to sign a waiver first.)

The smartest guys in the room said you could get rid of your all-pro center and quality right tackle and roll with injury prone QB’s. 3 QB’s down, plenty of cap space though!

Meanwhile the Falcons have strengthened their line with that all pro center and with more time for Ryan to throw have recaptured the magic in their offense.

…and remember, Mack didn’t want to leave Cleveland.

The smartest guys in the room let him go.

New Browns offense WORSE than the last one. Anyone can trade picks. It takes a real front office to keep the right guys and to acquire the right ones.

Yet remember, they’ll be disappointed if they don’t win more games this year.

    Poor Browns fans.

    Who’s Kessler’s backup? Brian Sipe?

Time for John E. Football’s triumphant return!
